I booked a room at the Camellia this year based on it being close to the condo my family was staying at and the number of positive experiences my parents have had there in the past. I called weeks in advance and reserved a unit (at an extra charge since "they usually do not do reservations") and excitedly looked forward to my time at DB. My expectations were not very high since I was todl again and again it is not luxury but its comfortable, has a great staff, and is, most importantly, clean.
I arrived and checked in, where I was told there would be an additional charge for a kitchenette unit (which I know I had discussed with the owner when I reserved). Should have been clue #1.
The unit-was not clean (the bathtub looked like it hadn't been washed in weeks and there were dust and dead bugs on top of the kitchen shelves and refrigerator), was in some disrepair (the lights in the kitchenette did not work, the stove did not work), and had nothing in the kitchette (no cookware, dishes, or silverware).
I talked to the manager and told her about the kitchen items needing fixed and assumed the staff would clean the kitchen and bath as part of their routine (especially since they kindly left a tip envelope). When I returned later in the day, someone else at the property (I couldn't tell who were employees and who weren't) told me they had fixed the kitchen light and hoped all was ok. I walked in to the unit and saw not only had it not been cleaned but, apparently, whomever fixed the light had been smoking while he did it since the unit now smelled strongly of cigarette smoke.
As it was late in the day, I informed the manager that we were unhappy and would be checking out the next morning and that I wished for the owner to call me. I found a unit across the street and we packed up the car before turning in for the night.
The next morning I gave the keys to the manager, who told me she would discuss my refund with the owner and have him call me, and we moved ourselves across the street.
I received a call from the manager later in the day that they would be refunding $81 of my $281. I again requested the owner call me.
More than two weeks later, I have still not heard from the owner or seen my refund.
This place may be ok for a pack of college kids more interested in a cheap place to party than a clean place to stay, but for a travelling family with a young child it was disappointing.
i love the charming hidden motel and tropical hideaway the camellia motel offers. my family and i vacationed there in july 2009 from rhode island and enjoyed every minute there. the rooms were quaint and clean and the rooms with kitchens and attaching rooms are great for a large family to vacation together ad realy be able to stay together. the owners and managers were super nice, and was helpful with all of our traveling questions for the hour. i recommend anyone to this place.
Return to the Camellia every winter for about month from the frozen Middle Earth. Great management with owner involvement and much effort in cleanliness and updating. Like our second home and look forward to the day when will be able to stay the whole winter at the Camellia. beach is just across the street and near all the ammenities.
I love the place.I manager Anna was very nice and welcomed me there. She gave me directions to any of the places I wanted to go.I would recommend this place to all of my friends and more.I was staying there for Spring Break 2008.
After going into many other motels and finding they were more expensive and much ruder we decided to try one last place. The man who runs the office was very nice. The room was small but not cramped and very clean. The bed was very comfortable too...a rarity in motels. I believe some of the rooms have kitchenettes as well.
