Great bargain price for a room in Hana
By ,
I took my mom for a trip in Hawaii and stayed at Joe’s Place for 2 nights during the Taro Festival. I can’t be happier with the price. $50 per night for a private room with two beds, a rare deal you can find in the expensive Maui. The room we stayed is simple and very clean. Although no A/C in the place, the ceiling fan and the ocean breeze keep the room temperature at a comfortable level. There are two bathrooms on the 1st floor shared by 3 guest rooms. During my stay all 3 rooms were occupied but we didn’t have issues sharing the bathrooms. The bathroom is very simple. It would be better if some shelf space and towel rack are added. The kitchen and living room are great for meeting with other guests. At our last night it happened to be the final competition of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. A Maui family stayed in one guest room started to watch the TV live broadcast and later everyone joined together. The locals shared their great knowledge about the hula dance and the terminology of the Hawaiian language used in the competition. The whole night was just fun and a great experience of making new friends and learning more about hula dance. Ed, the owner is helpful and friendly. I will definitely recommend this place to others.

Friendly, nice and cheap
By ,
We just spent a night there and because we have two children, the manager, Ed, let us have the downstairs and only had other people upstairs. He took the time to give us advice where to find things in Hana and during the evening he came over and made sure the main door downstairs got locked. A good deal for the price and the manager was really friendly and joking with us and the kids.

Almost made a big mistake!
By ,
So I called and booked a room but decided not to make the trip in the end. I called Ed to cancel, he said they dont do cancellations as it was past the period they allow refunds (even though I had also booked within this period a few hours ago), i thought this reasonable from his perspective but wanted to pursue my position seeing as i only booked a few hours ago and my gf had since fallen ill. I told him I disagreed etc etc, he went insane, I was very shocked, I was told I was "not welcome in Hana anymore/ I was stupid/ I had no experience in the hospitality industry and how dare I question his (which I didnt)" it was wild, then he asked me what was wrong with my gf "what is she dying or has a little tooth ache?" (too personal), I said that was not directly relevant and proceeded to calm him down, I wouldnt shy away from these situations and explained to him as disarmingly as I could that we apologized and would like to make another [longer] trip next week (a lie- but I had to give him a reason to bend), but was not sure anymore if I would due to his treatment of me on the phone etc. Eventually we agreed to refund me as a gesture of 'goodwill', I huge victory on my part I think after reading these other reviews. Anyway, guy is bonkers, give someone else your business, people like this need to learn! OR just do the Hana drive and head back to somewhere nicer that same day, its what I did.

Hostel prices for heavenly location
By ,
We stayed here 2 yrs. ago.... clean enough considering we were only sleeping there for the night. It was cheap and a welcome rest after a long day on the road and hiking. We're hostel regular's so a pissy owner doesn't phase us.

The guy Ed running the place is an assh*%e
By ,
The guy running the place, Ed is his name, in no way shape or form be in the hospitality industry....I called "Joe's Place" on Feb16th looking for a room. My call went something like this "Hey there, I am looking for a place for the night". I was told there was one. After a a few wrong turns I called back. "Hey there, I'm lost". I got directions. I pulled up to the office and walked in and said "Hey there, how are you. I spoke to you on the phone." The guy bit my head off. "That is the 3rd time you have called me "HEY", knock it off." I explained "where I come from HEY is HELLO-sorry". He went on for about 30 seconds ripping me and I just left. I had heard this guy was a prick but he proved it in about 30 seconds. Hey Ed, go get a job as a sewer cleaner-you better suited for it. I would buy a tent and stay at 7 pools before I stayed with that jerk off.

Joe's gone, Ed's there now
By ,
Clean enough if you discount the leaky plumbing in the kitchen addressed by a bowl and towel that stink, and the mildew stains in the shared (not-hot shower) bathroom. Cooking facilities are in a group kitchen with shared refrigerator. One TV is in the main room. Beds are OK, but provided towels are stiff. We are used to cockroaches, so that was not a new problem. However, the new manager, Ed, yells at and belittles his guests. We joked to ourslves that he misunderstood the word "hostel" to mean "hostile." Facilities are on-balance what you can expect for the price. Other accommodations in the town will cost twice as much or more. If you are on the strictest of budgets and have a resilient personality, you will be ok for a day or two. Your children will not enjoy Joe's.
