A true Chinese treasure
By stephen b, 9/15/07
I booked the Bamboo Garden Hotel online after much research. The price seemed good and naturally, since I had never been to Beijing, I knew nothing about the location except that it was in an older part of Beijing. What a find! After traveling up a dusty Hutong a gate opens to the Bamboo Garden Hotel. An oasis of beauty and calmness. The staff was attentive and the resturant and staff was great. The hotel is close to the subway and the bar area of the lake district. Not to mention the Drum and Bell Tower as well as other sights. After staying there a few days and interacting with the people I became a friend to the folks that lived and worked in the Hutong and along Guilou Street. We became almost like family. The hotel did arrange my pickup at the airport and transport back. Everything worked well. What can I say...other than to try it.

Beautiful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/18/06
Very quaint but not in a steriotyped way.... Modern and traditional at the same time The gardens were very pretty and it was a very quiet stay. Walking distance from the Drum and Bell towers as well as Tiananmen a little further on.

highly recommended
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/28/06
I loved the place. It was perfect for seeing around the place and excellent and for getting away from the bustle of the city. The staff were excellent - they couldn't do enough to help. I hope to go back there and will recommend it further.

Pretty Place Will Return Soon
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/17/05
I loved the gardens and the bamboo. The price quoted was misleading. They did upgrade my room but at a substantially higher price than quoted. The staff is friendly. Be careful if you can't take stairs to request a ground floor room. Also, they were tearing up the pavement and it was inconvenient. However, they do speak English which is a plus. I'll return because it feels homey and the bed was great along with little touches like adequate heat (Beijing winters are notoriously cold), a beauty salon just down the street and old town and central town access easily. Go if you can. Breakfast is nice and the gals are accommodating for special requests such as ketchup (the red stuff) and salt...

Staying with the secret policeman
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/6/05
This former home of a imperial eunuch and Mao's first chief of the secret police is now a very beautiful and authentic Hutong-style back-alley Chinese hotel. I have stayed in several rooms and will definitiely return to this hotel. The tube station is less than ten minutes walk, and takes you downtown easily. The Drum Tower is a 20 minute walk, and before you get there will find the best Peking duck restaurant in the world. The BBG has great desk service; can get tickets and drivers; and a useful business centre.
