Don't try their camping 'special'
By bikegata, 6/16/08
Inattentive staff, shorted me on linens, broken air mattress. Yes, we got to use the shower/toilet rooms that were nearby, which was nice, but I had to make several requests to get an air mattress that worked (spent the first night on the ground with no pad or mattress!). They were loathe to give me a break on the bill after a horrible first night. Next time I'll try a cabin but I will look elsewhere first. Their only saving grace is the gift shop and restaurant. Overpriced as the restaurant is, the food is pretty good (better food at the diner at Tioga Pass). The staff mostly seem indifferent and arrogant, as if you should already know all their rules and regulations. Some of the staff felt embarrassed, I think, but some were very indifferent and gave me a runaround. We need better and affordable lodging at Yosemite, for those of us who aren't up to hauling loads of gear, even by (hybrid small) car.

Lack of respect for guests, and fellow staff, people stuck in there own worlds not seeming to be 100% for the guests need's. Best in Groveland, or in the park.

Reservation Not Honored
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/14/06
In September I requested availability of a 2-bedroom family cabin and was told it was available for the Thanksgiving holiday. I replied that I wanted to reserve that room and attached the required reservation request with my credit information. I then received an email confirmation that my request had been honored for the dates requested. A week before the holiday I was reviewing my confirmation and noticed that I had been given a single room with a queen size bed. I called immediately to make sure that I was indeed getting a 2-bedroom cabin and was told there were none available and the manager was unwilling to make appropriate changes, even though he acknowledged that the error was due to his employee mistake. Of course, there is nothing else available anywhere in the area at this time.

Resveration canceled by Lodge....
By Jules, 9/25/06
I just wanted to pass on our experience (or lack there of) with this group. After reading good reviews on the Evergreen Lodge we decided to book a week there next summer. Upon reviewing the TA reviews and their website, we decided to stay in their new "tents" for a couple of nights and then in the cabins for the reminder of our stay. With three kids, two nights in tents is long enough, but we really wanted todo the tents as my 8 year old has been begging to go tent camping. I made the reservation on August 2. They went through a long spiel on if I make any cancelation or changes to the resevration now it is a $50 fee, any changes closer to the date we loose a nights deposit. This is okay with me as I know how Yosemite and the surrounding areas book up. This past Friday, September 22, I receive an e-mail from them (not a phone call) stating that they refunded our deposit for the tents as a large group was coming in and they gave them the campground (they just made the reservation on the Spet 22nd), woudl we like differetn days. I then called and left her a message to call me so we could talk on the phone instead of e-mailing back and forth. She did not return my call. I then received another e-mail today stating that the following weekend would also be booked. I called again and actually reached her (she answered the phone) and she said that large groups are given priority to the campground and her staff made a mistake taking my reservation. She would be happy to give me the cabin though. I ended up canceling the reservation completely - but told her that I was a bit disappointed in how it was handled and would think twice about reserving there in the future and also that it was a bit frustrating as Touloumne and othe rpark options were already completely booked up. She came back with "it is almost a years notice - that is plenty of notice for us to give you - it isn't as if you are arriving next week". I told her if I was the one cancelling now, she would be charging me a cancellation fee to which I got the "what exactly is it that you want me to do?" All I wanted was a simple apology and a professional handling of the situation - instead I got an obnoxious lady who was down right rude. Oh well - that's the way things go - we will find somewhere else to go and have a wonderful time, but just beware if you book tents have a back up plan.

Cannot recommend.
We stayed at Evergreen in early September....but conditions caused us to leave after two nights of a planned three night stay. Location: Left something to be desired...about an hour to the valley floor...one way. Reception: Poor. The desk clerk was barely attentive and left us with the impression that she wouldn't look at her watch to tell us the time had we been so bold as to ask. Under any circumstances do not make the error of asking when your $185 cabin might be ready. Parking: Unsatisfactory. There are not enough parking spaces to accommodate guests cars. Most cabins do not have designated parking spaces. The staff was about as helpful as the receptionist: park only in designated parking spots.... but they're probably all full so you'll have to park on the street in front of the property and walk back to your cabin. Facilities: Although I've seen them described as "rustic" a better adjective would be "elementary". No television. No radio. No telephone. No closet. No luggage stands. No hair drier. One wall light and one reading lamp in each room. A cabin for four might reasonably be expected to have at least that number of bath and hand towels and face cloths...but not here. After trying (unsuccessfuly) earlier in the day to get an idea of when our cabin would be ready we set out for our pre-arranged afternoon tour. We ate dinner at Yosemite and arrived back at the Lodge at 9 PM. It was cold, about 40 degrees, but all the windows in our cabin were wide open. Both heaters had been turned off and then we discovered that only one worked. Cleanliness: The rooms were functionally clean but little attention had been paid to details: i.e. corners and baseboards were dusty and the sofa still had crumbs on it from where the last occupants ate lunch. Overall: Not recommended.

You can't beat this place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/2/06
My wife and I along with my two daughters (11 and 8) stayed in the "cedar" cabins at the end of August 2006. The cabins were built in 2005 and it showed. Their were immaculate. Large two bedroom cabin with no TV (that was a plus even for a TVaholic like me). The dining room was above average for all meals. You only have one choice since the nearest place is 30 minutes away. The facilities are great. The recreation room has free internet, board games, movies and occasional bingo with free prizes (free ice cream, $40 gift certificate etc.). Their is an out door ping pong table as well. I would definitely go back.

Made me wish I were back home
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/28/05
My husband and I just returned from a three day stay at the Evergreen Lodge. First off, the parking was horrible. We ended up parking in the street in front of the lodge the first night because of the meager parking space. The road is not paved, and the parking area is not clearly delineated. Some cars used up too much space (improperly parked), leaving us with not much of a choice. I do like the gravel roadway because it adds to the ambience of the place, but a better parking system would have been great. The restaurant food is just passably okay. We had dinner there for three nights, and each time I could hardly eat the food. We had one breakfast at the restaurant. For the milk and orange juice, we each got a dinky little glass that was about the equivalent of a shot glass. When my husband commented to the waitress that the glass is so small, she replied that, "It's probably because we let it hatch too early," and left. Pretty obscure and not even funny. She also forgot the toast (well, I did, too, until after the meal). There was no way I was going to have another breakfast in that place. Unfortunately, for dinners we didn't have much of a choice because the area is pretty isolated. The room is nice-sized. However, there were no hairdryers (a fact I didn't know about, so I ended up drying my hair by the fireplace). The bathrooms had bare floors; we had to use one of the towels to step on after showering. There are also no phones in the cabins. If you run out of towels like we did (they didn't make up the room and replace the towels like we asked), you have to walk all the way back up to the front desk. When it's raining and cold like it was when we were there, that isn't too much fun. Also, in this case, don't plan on having a heart attack or fall in the shower (which was pretty slippery and had no handles) while you're in your cabin because there is no way to communicate with the outside world (and that includes the front desk). The wifi also didn't work too well in the recreation center (which is the only place you can get wifi at). I guess the whole point about being on vacation and therefore not being connected makes sense, but it would be great to have that as an option rather than an imposition. Which brings me to the staff. There were some who were really helpful, but some of them were downright cranky. You can almost see little balloon thoughts coming from them thinking: "Another batch of whiny tourists.... Great." To be fair, a few of them were cheerful and warm. But I don't much care about the surly ones. And the coup de grace: we were quoted one price when we booked our reservation, and a different price was charged when we were checking out. I tried to point this out to the unhappy young man at the desk, but he was either too obtuse to understand (the original price was charged right on the bill to hold our reservation), or I was just too unpersuasive to make sense. My husband decided it wasn't worth the half hour we had to stay longer at the place to sort this out. Would I recommend this place to my friends and family? Doubt it. I like the place, but it's a little too rough around the edges, and not in a nice way. The way I described it to my husband: It's like a bunch of kids decided to open a lodge and see what happens. There's quite a bit of disorganization there, especially in the restaurant. We definitely got the impression that the whole place was run by amateurs. We were ready to make the most of the vacation, but these little annoyances kept poking their heads in. It was the first time I've been to Yosemite, and I'd love to go back for another visit. But I won't be staying at this lodge again.
