So after a slightly late start (this would be a pattern), we were off on our grand road trip. Driving from Nick's house we made our way up highway 101 with the plan to stop in Eureka for the night. We alternated driving every few hours and finally made it at about one AM in Eureka to stay at the beautiful Econo Lodge. Loaded up the car with our stuff and finally hit the road at 12:20 pm. As we set out, the weather was nice and sunny and stayed that way all the way to Redding, CA. Drove along 680 - 80- 505 - 5. Most of the drive was through flat lands. Saw some spurts of lovely colored fall foliage on trees on the last stretch of 680 and on the 80. Stopped for gas somewhere along the 505. By this time stomachs were a rumbling. So we had our lunch there too - in some parking lot near the gas station. Lunch consisted of delicious qeema sandwiches and water. We started off great, left a little earlier than planned which was amazing. I was nervous about the drive in the winter but everything went fine so far. In Oakland it was sunny and we thought the weather would be nice for the trip. By the time we reached Redding it was raining. The rain turned into snow just as we crossed the Oregon border. The wind picked up and it was cold. Snow trucks were plowing and that's when I saw the dreaded snow chains sign. Luckily it wasn't required but the road was slick.
