Yes, this first day doesn't sound as if it were worth the 2,000+-mile flight, but stick around. It gets better. Most everyone who knows me knew how much I needed this trip. When my sister canceled on me, I searched frantically for a travel companion. Then, when three volunteers stepped forward just days before I left, I decided I wanted to go solo. I needed to go solo. After a long night mostly spent packing and making my home somewhat presentable to the most wonderful kitten-sitter ever, I was on my way, headed to the most remote islands on the planet for some much-needed R&R. My husband and I decided on a whim to go to Hawaii after coming across a deal to go on a 7 day cruise including airfare for $999.00 each. We flew into Hilo and drove to a B&B in Volcano Village on the first day. It was part of the Chalet Kilauea chain and we stayed in the Lokelani room at the Volcano B&B. The Volcano B&B is a hundred-year-old house. Three stories high, 6 bedrooms, and a large living area with kitchen and dining rooms. It sounds charming to stay in a hundred-year-old house, but it's not. A house that old smells funny. And the bathroom has outdated fixtures, and moths come into the shower with you. The man renting the bedroom next to ours had bronchitis and stayed in his room coughing at all hours of the day and n...
