Our trip route on Google Maps. I'll admit it - I'm a maximizer. Why else would I build an entire family roadtrip to the Southwest in late spring based solely on the fact that National Car Rental had a great one-way rate for just about any sized vehicle from Phoenix to Denver. I scored a mid-sized SUV, and all the plans fell into place from there. We left Austin around 10 am. We drove through West Texas and stopped at Texas Road House in Abilene for lunch. We had reserved seats for the Texas! Musical at Palo Duro Canyon, but actually arrived in Canyon earlier than expected, so we went ahead and drove to S. Amarillo to check into our hotel. After checking in and resting for a few minutes, we drove to Palo Duro Canyon to see the musical. The musical was great, and a perfect ending to a long day in the car.
