Our trip route on Google Maps. I'll admit it - I'm a maximizer. Why else would I build an entire family roadtrip to the Southwest in late spring based solely on the fact that National Car Rental had a great one-way rate for just about any sized vehicle from Phoenix to Denver. I scored a mid-sized SUV, and all the plans fell into place from there. Of course, that meant two one-way flights (usually more expensive) for the four of us, and oh yes, to fit in a trip of any real length, we'd have to leave on Bryson's last day of school and be home just 7 days later so that Bryson and I could immediat...

We left Austin around 10 am. We drove through West Texas and stopped at Texas Road House in Abilene for lunch. We had reserved seats for the Texas! We ate lunch at the Nugget Diner in downtown Reno. It was cheap, filling, a little greasy, fitting my preconceived notions of Reno. I recommend it. We continued on I-80 until Fernley, NV, where US 50 takes off. We were going to more or less follow 50, and later I-70 directly to Colorado Springs. Oddly enough, some Anglophile build a giant traffic circle at the intersection of I-80 and US 50. It seemed very out of place for such an ...
