The prices, service and hub airport were all fine, but the time their flights were scheduled were a little challenging. Our flight to Baku arrived at 5.45 am and our flight from Yerevan left at 04.30 am. The Debed River Canyon is littered with stunning scenery and monasteries. The river runs under mountains and cliffs, which are often topped with perfectly flat plains, where little agrarian villages sprouted thousands of years ago. Alaverdi is the biggest town in the canyon, and good for shopping and catching transportation, but it really doesn't offer much unless you are interested in massive Soviet mine operations. Overnight trip to Gyumri
Heading out of Yerevan early, we made a few stops along the way. First stop was Aruch Cathedral, a gem built in 666. The adjacent castle of the Mamikonian family is in complete ruins, but the massive cathedral looms above the village, and must have truly amazed people 1,400 years ago. Some of the frescoes are faintly visible still, but unfortunately the dome has collapsed. The sign for Aruch is posted on the highway, and it's only a 5 minutes from the highway.
