Some hotels have an impressive entrance porter on duty; the 'Duke' often has two. We were even initially greeted by one of them run-returning from an errand 40 metres out at the entrance of the hotel's own little road! We loved the very central quiet, discreet seclusion. I was never called 'Sir' but always addressed by my name. Going from the cleanliness and high food standard of home to a hotel one does not want a drop in standards; there is no drop at the 'Duke', it also has its own individual special ambience. 'We'll be [soon]' room service was usually 'sooner'. Some hotel showers require one to handle an ugh plastic curtain, have one's glasses to inspect the dial(s), and wish one had the instruction manual. The 'Duke' shower is the best I've met going round the world. Finally, never did get to have one of their famous martinis but their room service Earl Grey tea is of the very best - and love the ginger biscuits with their chocolate chips.

Have stayed several times and found the staff exceptionally friendly (they always record your preferences), the rooms a mite small, the location fantastic for entertainment and restaurants...and of course the martinis - do not try for three. Even better, though, is the very select brandy/cognac shelf. A warning, though, listen carefully when the bartender describes the choices, the year of the brandy, and the approximate cost. Two glasses of 100 year brandy once cost more than my room. But enjoyable!!!

The location is outstanding, a short distance to everything. Tucked into a tiny alcove, the hotel is quiet and peaceful. Service was cooperative (restaurant recommendations and reservations were done efficiently). Afternoon tea in the room was particularly well done. The rooms, though not especially large, were more than comfortable and totally up-to-date. Bathrooms were excellent. We shared a suite with our teenage grand daughters on the last visit and they were ecstatic with the room. At Dukes, we always get the feeling that we're staying at a British hotel, not a transplanted American hotel.

Dukes Hotel is fanatastic for its location and its service. I loved the St James area...we walked to the theater, had dinner at some amazing restaurants, and it was easy enough to jump on the tube and go anywhere in the city! A lot of people go to Dukes just for the bar. Their martinis are wonderful - but be careful as they are very strong. The bartender will come to your table and demonstrate how to make the perfect martini. An excellent end to a long day of work and exploring.

...somewhat hidden location...but...Best in London!!! Within walking distance of the Ritz and St. James Palace. Convenient (via Cab) to West End Theatre district and to Buckinham Palace. Restaurant is ideal for romantic lunch or business meeting.
