Had a wonderful time, would go back
By ,
We found the staff to be very professional and friendly. Very accomodating. I had to follow up with a lost item and they were extremely helpful. I would say this of everyone I met at Grand Bahama. They had the welcoming drinks etc available for ample time @ 4pm (check in time). We had arrived early and were able to rent a vehicle for $250/wk, excellent rate. Advise having your own vehicle to get around. So we went to Port Lucaya to explore, eat before check in. We stayed in a 3 bedroom townhouse. Tons of room, 3 bedrooms and 3 baths. The resort had activities every evening if you cared to join in. Esther at the Tiki Bar was wonderful and her cooking is great! The resort is at a marina, they don't advertise being on the beach. But there is a beach if you go down the road. If you like more crowds, stay at Port Lucaya resorts. Best beaches are remote like at Lucaya National Park. Scuba/snorkel at Paradise Cove (Deadmans reef on the west end). Timeshare reps at ORYC can be avoided. 2 pools. If you want to rent the little boat to get around the canals, reserve in advance. It was booked our entire stay. You can rent boats at the marina at Port Lucaya. The winds picked up from tropical depression so waves were 4-6ft making it difficult to go overshore. You can compare resorts tours to packages out of Port Lucaya. We did everything on our own so no advice on tours here. We shopped at City Market and picked up food and drink supplies since we had fully equipped kitchen. BBQ on back porch. I can't wait to go back.

Never going back here
The location was horrible. Although it appears to be close to the beach, you cannot go there other than by taxis, who grossly over charge. The hospitality is extremely bad and the staff is very rude. And even if you're a little late, you're not gonna get the welcome drink, which is pretty bad anyway. Additionally, all of the tours offered by the resort are grossly overpriced. They charged $79/person for a 5 hr kayaking trip when you could get a kayk for 24 hrs for only $5. They charged $69/person for a trip to the national park when you could rent a car for $55 and $3/person admission to the park! Anyway, there were a lot of better sorts out there including Island Seas, Our Lucaya reef village, the radisson etc all right on the beach and/or at port lucaya.

Had a great time!
By ,
We stayed in an oversized two bedroom suite, and it was spacious, clean, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. The large deck was perfect in the evenings. We went diving with Grand Bahama Scuba (on site), and that couldn't have been any better - safety and fun wise. Grouper's Restaurant had some very good dishes. Ray the resident manager helped us in every way possible - he is a great guy. Stay away from the Dutch man. He didn't seem too firendly. Lucaya and several beaches are walkable, or you can take a free daily shuttle from the resort, hire a taxi, or use the very affordable, but charmingly random public bus service. Don't miss the Wednesday night fish fry at Smith's Point. We rented a car one day and drove to the other end of the island - a whole other place. We really enjoyed Ocean Reef's accomodations, amentities, and staff, and we'll definitely go back.

Will NEVER go back - even if it was free
By ,
The resort was old and run down, but clean. The staff at the restaurant was HORRIBLE at best. The manager of the resort was rude, arrogant and treated our family awful. I was appalled, disappointed and he ruined our vacation. I have never been so poorly treated in my life. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I would recommened the Sheraton or the Windham in Port Lucaya - they were beautiful and centrally located. getting taxis' from here was expensive and the buses NEVER run on time. the "courtesy bus" from the resort never picked us up from the beach when scheduled and no one could seem to get things straight the ORYC - it seemed as though they opened the day before and had a lot of glitches to work out.

The Best Ever
By ,
Excellent resort. People are friendly and helpful. I don't understand some of the negative comments other people have been writing about this resort. Of course, always complaining can put people off at the end even if they are the staff! Respect and courtesy goes both ways. I had an excellent time. Thank you.

Run down but friendly
By ,
The hotel rooms are clean however a little run down looking. There is a small pool and one resturaunt (with awful service) on site. During the summer mosquitos are a BIG problem. The location is around 5 miles from anything. There is one cab service for the Ocean Reef...if they are not available ..like say they feel they have put in a days work or perhaps it is a holiday..then you are on your own to find your way into town. Also, there are around 2 blackouts a day on the complex..have no fear..it happens all the time and the power will be up and running in around 10 minutes. If you want to save money this is the place to be..However you get what you pay for..no frills with a smile.

Own a time share here.
By ,
My husband owned a time share with ORYC when I met him. This will be our third time going down since we were married in 2000, and we'll be going down this year with 8 other people. The staff there is very friendly, and accommodating. I've read several of the reviews, and one of the people commented said that they take a commission for the activities that they book for you. This may be true, but in comparison to what they charge, for what you would pay if you booked it on your own, there's no real difference...and, it's more convenient for them to do it. The units have always been clean, and the staff generally comes in mid-week to give the unit a wipe down. I've never had any issues with the pools, and have found them both to be very clean. My children have used the tennis court, and the game room, and have enjoyed them both. The grounds are well kept, the area is very secure, they have a great little store that you can pick up quick necessities, and if you ask real nicely, Tia might even braid your hair at about 1/2 the cost. Also, if Esther is still there, she makes AMAZING bread that you can buy pretty cheaply! Make sure you check out the member party as well! My only complaint is that the beach isn't right there. There is a bus stop near the resort as well...taxis get pretty expensive quick...especially with 10 people! Enjoy your stay! We always do!!

Not What we expected
By ,
Most of the attractions are away from the place - including the beach. This place is definately set up as a yacht club as long as you are docking your own boat. Because there are never any boats available to take out. All are out of service. There is an activity board - it changes or things do not occur that is listed. Also, the place takes a commision to set up your tours - Not impressed. People are friendly, but they are friendly all over the Bahamas. I wouldn't recommend this place for families as it is not very family oriented and it can become a long week.
