Mahekal Beach Resort, Playa del Carmen

My husband and I have stayed at Shangri-La Caribe three times and have reservations to go back this November. This is a wonderful resort and the staff is fantastic! We heard they were closing and I was sad. Now knowing they will be open a couple more years we will make sure we let them know we love this place and hope it never closes!

For 23 yrs. straight my husband and I have gone to Shagri La. We have brought many friends and have never loved any place as much as this resort, and we have been all over the world. We know all the staff and have always had first class treatment. There is nothing negative we can say. Our hearts are broken that our little slice of heaven has been sold. Don't think we will ever find a place as magnificent.:-((

Absolutely phenomenal. Too bad the owners are under contract to sell and turn the property over to the buyers in April 2009, to be torn down to make way for condos. Adios, mi paradisio, Shangri-La Caribe.

I loved the scenery, the ocean, the little one-room house. Most of all, I loved the waiters, Ruben, Ivan and Juan. It has been about a year since I have been to the Shangri La' and I still hven't forgotten these exciting people! If you are looking for a hotel you can relax at and count on, then you have come to the right place! : ) : ) : )

relax , good food , great beach, comfortable room .its a pity that rooms are really basic and would be nice to have a mini fridge in room. other than that a lovely , quiet relexing place.

The Shangri-La Caribe is my new favorite destination! My sister got married there last July, and I have wanted to go back ever since I got home! The hotel is rustic and beautiful, the staff was super friendly, the food was excellent, and the beach was wonderful! They take such pride in taking care of this resort, and work so hard in doing so, from combing the beach to cleaning your room daily and everything in between! We are planning a trip back in June 08, and hope to return there many more times!

The Caribe Shangri-La gives Ritz-Carlton service at a Red Roof price! It's 45 minutes from downtown Cancun, and a 5 minute walk into downtown Playa Del Carmen. I have stayed at this resort 3 times since 2001. Great location on the beach, clean rooms and extremely helpful staff. The pools are delicious, and although breakfast and dinner is usually included, you can always walk into town for something more exotic. Visit the Dia Del Muerte store, or take a ferry (for $4) to Isla Mujeres. Rent a big wheeled beach buggy and see the whole island twice in a few hours! Spend a day in Cozumel, and a day at the ruins in Tulum. I (and everyone I have visited here with) loves Xcaret and Xpu-Ha. Be adventurous and explore the caves of Dos Ojos, "the two eyes" (underwater fresh water rivers), go into Cancun for a day. The Yucatan is extremely tourism-friendly. Even the billboard signs (in Spanish) remind locals that no matter whats business they are in, they are in tourism.

We loved this place. While Playa del Carmen is not the small undeveloped bohemian town it used to be, there is a lot of development and resort, condo construction, it is still one of the best places to go on the Mayan Riviera. Shangri La was the best resort we saw and found. it is the original resort there. used to have no buildings around itl. it's still very relaxed, great hospitality, breakfast and dinners included, good food, the buffet nights are the best. the rooms are wonderful. we had the top floor of a two floor house/hut with a domed thatch ceiling, AC, ceiling fan, a deck with two hammocks a drying line for bathing suits and towels, and a very comfortable king sizes bed. we were in the garden area but we still heard the surf at night. the drinks are delicious and there's pool and ping pong and one tv in the open bar area. it's set up like a mayan village with two pools, a dive shop and great ammenities but it's all in a quaint mayan aesthetic. not too big, not antiseptic like hotels can be and not too resorty. very very nice people working there. they were very accomodating as far as hiring good drivers if you don't want to rent a car to see the sights. our driver took us to Tulum and Coba for $150, for the entire day and told us all about the mayan history. the beach at shangri la is also beautiful and great swimming. we can't wait to go back! we love shangri la.

We went here last week - end of October. The resort is beautiful but just a few blocks away you can find pure poverty. Our room was robbed of all it's cash. The thief was caught and our money was returned. He went to jail. There were also 2 weddings here during the week which made for two noisy crowds both on and off the beach. The food was decent, breakfast being better than the dinners. I probably would not go back here just because I don't like this part of Mexico too much. There are too many Mexicans trying to milk all of the cash from your wallet. Also, don't go to Xcaret or Xelha - they are setup to get your cash.If you are looking for incredible snorkeling and a quiet beach go to Akumal. Be prepared to tell many people that you don't want to buy a timeshare and that you don't smoke cigars either.

We visited for a week for a wedding and it was just beautiful, very clean, the food was awesome, and we could have not asked for better service. It is much quiter than a big hotel and we found it very romantic as well! Cant wait to vacation there again soon.
