excellent hotel but be careful about your vehicle
We were a bit apprehensive after reading some negative reviews, but we enjoyed the hotel. The bedding, carpets and floors were all very clean and well maintained, and the WiFi and cable worked well. We enjoyed the breakfast downstairs, and the staff was polite. The hotel is very centrally located with most event centers and sites easily within walking distance and historic buildings all around. Most buses from other parts of the city stop along Graham Mall, which is a block and a half away. It was an excellent hotel for the price.
However, please take into account if you are staying at the Marlborough Hotel that while it is a beautiful city with a lot of historic charm and fun events in the summer, Winnipeg, especially downtown Winnipeg, has much higher crime rates than other Canadian cities, and car break-ins are common, especially if your license plates are from outside Manitoba. We were disappointed that the hotel staff suggested that we park in the parking ramp across the street. Someone smashed in the window of my friend's SUV and broke into it, apparently looking for valuables, and the same thing happened to two other vehicles parked in the same ramp the same night. We highly recommend either getting a club and an alarm system for your vehicle before going to Winnipeg and parking either in a very visible spot (i.e. right in front of the hotel where the staff can see it) or in a ramp with 24-hr security if you must park downtown. If you could find a safe place to park outside of downtown and then take a city bus into downtown, that would probably be best.
