Get what you pay for, and this is a bargain
We stayed here last weekend. It was simply okay. Definitely reinforced the old adage, "You get what you pay for." We chose Canaan Valley Resort because it was one of the least expensive options compared to other resorts in the PA/WV/MD/VA area and we just wanted a cheap weekend away. So while we expected something a little less nice than Wisp, Rocky Gap, etc., I think we would have been better off at a chain hotel.
First of all, do not arrive after dark. The entrance sign is not lighted so we drove way past it. The rooms are tiny - We had a single queen - I cannot imagine how crowded it would have been with two doubles or even a king. The bathrooms are gross. The caulking around the tub was peeling and where it was peeling, it was black. The knobs on the water controls were yellow, stained, and missing the hot and cold labels.
One thing that is nice is the breakfast buffet. It's comprehensive, the service is great, and the food is delicious. But it's also about $25 per person!
The surrounding landscape is breathtaking. Deer are a constant presence, adding to the serene mountain feeling.
We went to play tennis one morning and promptly decided against it. The courts were dirty and rundown looking. One the other side of the 2 courts was the "skate park" which was basically a couple of ramps put on top of the other tennis courts. Not impressive at all.
We tried to use the hot tub for several hours. And each time we went in there it was full of a dozen or so young (elementary age) children. There was clearly a sign posted stating that that hot tub was for ages 13+. I wouldn't have minded sharing with teenagers, but these kids were using it as an extension of the pool - jumping around and carrying on while their parents and the pool attendant looked on.
Overall, it wasn't what we were looking for. We mentioned our complaints to the front desk but really most of these things - except for the room - were out of their jurisdiction. If you're looking for a cheap, budget hotel with some resort amenities, this will work for you. Otherwise, pay a little bit more and go somewhere that actually cares about providing a quality experience. Lesson learned!
