We weren't crazy about it...
By A.J., 5/6/06
My friend and I were on a road trip last summer and stopped for a night in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. We were able to stay at this hotel for free since I'd accumulated enough points through Choice Hotels to earn a free night's stay. Overall, I wasn't terribly impressed. It wasn't the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, but it certainly was not the best. It had a slight old-world charm to it, but it was kind of dark and dingy. We got a room with two queen-sized beds, and I remember it was really cramped and could barely fit two beds in it. The bathroom was not very nice. All it had was a shower (kind of like the kind of nasty showers you might find in community bathrooms in a college dormitory) and no bathtub. There was no counter space in the bathroom by the sink, so I had to put all my toiletries on the toilet seat next to me. That wasn't too convenient. One redeeming feature that this hotel had was the restaurant/bar (I can't remember the name of it). The food was pretty good, and the staff were friendly. Another good feature was the computer/Internet stations that the hotel has in the lobby. That was nice. I was able to surf the Internet and check my email while my friend was working out in the exercise room. Overall, I probably will never stay here again. But hey...we didn't have to pay for the room so it wasn't bad for that.

Horrible experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/24/06
This place was ridiculous. It was the middle of August and the air conditioning in every room was broken. We were even blamed for breaking ours in our room! We later spoke with some other residents and they said the same thing. Worst hotel stay ever.

Dark and Dreary
By Richard, 11/14/05
Lost our reservation, but did have a spare room - not too suprising, since I wouldn't ever stay there again. The lobby area is quaint and comfortable. The rooms are dimly lit - lights were not on a switch and had to fumble around in the dark to find lamps. Bathroom was extremely small and desparately needed work. Restaurant was extremely slow and had very few breakfast selections. The staff was helpful - otherwise this would have received 1 star.

I thought I was in a Motel 6.
By eatthechikin, 9/16/05
The hotel was very old and in need of a renovation badly (even though the in room brochure says it got one). On my way up to the room, I could see the ventilator grill on the wall cracked open. The carpet was sort of old and worn out and doesn't look very clean. Wallpaper was peeling off too. Room has 2 bathrooms but both are tiny, with only standing shower. The tiles on the floor look like the kind they use at the park's public restroom, and looking not really clean either. And yeah, as another traveler commented, I could hear the people on the room next door talking when they are loud. Even worse, they charge for everything. Parking is $8/day (valet since you'd be hard pressed to find a spot on your own). If you need a microwave, that's another $10. Even the wireless hi speed internet cost $10, and it doesn't even work. When I got on, it said the connection was down. It would be a good idea to bring your DVD collection since the in room TV has about a handful of channels, mostly the broadcast ones, and TNT. The TV was even barely watchable since it was very dark and grainy, and there was no way to adjust the picture's quality. My advice is stay away from this one and go somewhere else. The Quality Suites Lakewright is very nice and only 10 minutes away.

Old Southern Charmer in Disrepair
By Zazu, 7/7/05
You can tell this once was a grand hotel which has fallen over the years in disrepair. Beautiful lobby, bar, and restaurant area which with some cleaning, new furniture and fixing could be a sparkling again. Rooms are average but there are no mini bars or high speed internet access. Also very soft mattresses on the beds. I got the room for $55 a night on Priceline so I saved money on the deal. Parking is very reasonable.

The WORST
By seriously, 7/2/04
This is by far the worst hotel that I have EVER, EVER stayed in. I got in very early in the morning after a long drive, and wanted nothing but sleep, which I got none of.

Why? For starters, the mattresses on BOTH beds in my room were in horrid condition. They were caved in badly, and when my guest and I lay down on them, we felt like we were lying on an incline. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls, the window in our room was so dirty, we could barely look out of it. The bathroom (If you could call it that) looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in years...I found sunflower seeds in the floor, and neither myself nor the guest I was with ate sunflower seeds. It was obvious that the rest of the room hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in a while, as there was dust caked on the headboards of both beds as well. We even noticed a comment card on the desk that a prior occupant had filled out, but the hotel staff hadn't bothered to pick up. God forbid that you have people in the room next to you (or even a floor above or below) who decide to engage in "Personal" activities...the walls are PAPER THIN, and you will hear EVERYTHING.

Upon checkout, I complained about the condition of the room, and was told to contact corporate, which I did, immediately upon returning home. I also spoke with the hotel manager, who credited back half the price I paid for the room, but since I didn't feel I should have to pay for a room like that, I called corporate, and was told I'd get a response within 7-10 days. I stayed back in February, and here it is July, and still nothing. I've given up. I just know that I will NEVER stay there again.

Ridiculous....I've never had a problem with a clarion hotel before. This is enough to not make me want to stay in one ever again.
