YIKES!
I had a little bit of extra cash for this part of my travels in transit from Luray, VA to Lexington, VA (Natural Bridge) so I decided to stay at a Holiday Inn full service rather than a Holiday Inn Express. Did I consult the handy reviews here? Umm, NOPE...never going to do that one again.
Check in was very poor. Front desk clerk was outstide smoking at the front entrance and saw me walk in, did not follow me in to check me in, just continued to finish her cigarette. Had to wait at an empty desk for 5 minutes. At one point I thought that maybe she was not even hotel staff. Eventually got me checked in to one of the "executive" suites. Walked into to the room and saw something very disturbing, housekeeping did not even flush the toilet when the room was cleaned, I had a nice little floating present in it. ARRGGH. Called down to the front desk, no answer? Tried again...same thing, no answer. Third time call, finally got the front desk person. I asked her why it took so long for her to answer the phone, she said she was doing other "guest services"....hmmm. Bad story I think. In any case she sent me to another room next door. The room was a good size but was in need of some redecorating it seems, the walls were dull and the bed linen was kind of dingy looking. Bathroom this time was clean..I think..but was kinda small. I had a better room at Holiday Inn Expresses.
I ventured to the hotel "dining room" It was empty...that should have clued me in right? NOPE. Waited 5 minutes for anyone to even show me to a table, staff was non-exsistent here too! Actually had to go to the bar to ask the bartender if the restraunt was even open. Once we got service it wasnt bad though, waitstaff was trying very hard to make up for the awful food. French onion soup had about 1/4 inch of oil layered on the top and tasted sour, almost like vinegar. Ribs were dry and mashed potatoes did not look appetizing at all.
Okay so here is the kicker...ready? I go out to the front entrance to take a smoke break and see the front desk lady get into a car and drive off somewhere...I am thinking this is really good but then I go back inside and find out that there is no front desk person. There is a sign saying that front desk associate is busy with other "guest services" and to wait 5-10 minutes. She left! like go bye bye. HA. Went upstairs and immediatley called Holiday Inn corporate and explained my trip thus far. Of course they were very apologetic and said they would look into it. I went back down 15 minutes later and there was the front desk clerk again outside smoking as the phones were ringing inside...not a care in the world.
I am glad I only had to stay one night in this hotel but looking back on it, it was a good laugh for a long trip.
In the future I will always check the Yahoo Reviews before travelling. If I had done so, I would have found that the Holiday Inn EXPRESS was a far superior hotel for a cheaper rate.
