Location & view
Location: it's unbeatable. It might be the only hotel located in Monument Valley. Most or all of the rooms have a view of the rock formations right out the window, right there!
Room: for an American hotel I found the room rather small, and something was wrong with the electrical outlet: my cellphone charger caused the breaker to trip. (I use the cellphone as alarm clock, and even saw a signal though weak)
Service: The front desk was friendly. Restaurant was friendly and food was plentiful and good but not great.
Tour: The full-day tour was great. I was disappointed by the lack of information about the geology of the rocks, but really did enjoy the guide's in-depth knowledge of Navajo life styles. She was a native speaker of the Navajo language. In our case the outside temperature was near freezing all day, but the bus was well heated, and we had many (about 20 or more) opportunities to stop and take many short walks outside. Each disembarkation brought a sudden temperature change that would certainly make me sick, but my thick down jacket was easy to zip on and off. I felt sorry for those who layered with pullover sweaters.
Interesting side note: the Navajo used Juniper for many things. Later that evening I read in a Nature Magazine review of a book by John Riddle, that one species of Juniper could "save young women from shame, and modern science has finally confirmed its contraceptive effects." No, the tour guide didn't mention this, and I don't know whether the species was the same...
