Buyer Beware

The hotel is a spectacular property in sunny Cancun but there are hundreds of spectacular properties in Cancun. We stayed at the Gran Melia and based on positive reviews paid for the Royal Service (basically their conceige level). We had a letter with the terms of the Royal Service which included a room in the "Royal tower", alcoholic drinks, etc. Upon arrival we were presented a new letter telling us the conditions of the service we had paid for had been changed. The tower was closed for repairs and we were no longer allowed alcoholic drinks, etc. We presented our letter and finally we told we could get drinks as we had paid for but little else. We sat listening to the staff tell other guests the same story and when they complained they told them to prove what they had paid for or too bad. We went for four days without hot water and spent most of the week arguing with the staff and management to honor what we had paid for. Upon arriving home we relayed our experiences to the General Manager who passed it along to the Resident Manager who couldn't care less. We wrote to Sol Melia, the parent company, and have received no response which indicates they believe this is how to treat guests as well. Be advised, if you have a stay booked at this hotel be prepared to prove what you paid for and be prepared to argue your entire stay. We can only assume this is also how guests are treated at other Sol Melia properties as well. This property is part of the Leading Hotels of the World, how that is possible is difficult for us to understand.
