This was a good hotel to start out at, since all I wanted to do was sleep after the long plane trip. It was also centrally located for the King's birthday celebrations.
There is a lot of street food around Khao San Road, but this neighborhood seemed a little shady at night. Definately have a bowl of noodles and some roasted bananas. The move across town and stay at the nicer hotels for $10/night more.
Have a taxi take you to the T.A.T. office if you need help planning activities. They're great!
We stayed at this hotel in March 2006. The hotel was clean and had good service. We received twin beds instead of a double, but other than that...we had a great stay. The location is the best feature as it is one street away from the touristy Khoa San Rd. Good selection for breakfast in the morning.
While the hotel in general, the room, and the breakfasts met my expectations, the service was so poor as to be ridiculous. In spite of there frequently being four unoccupied staff members behind the desk, it was difficult to get anyone to help me. The only time someone seemed glad to see me was when I checked out! Requests for information that a concierge might normally provide were met with shrugs and silence. Directing me to the nearest tourist information center would have been too much to ask?
Also, why there is a smarmy taxi hawker at the door masquerading as a concierge is beyond me. This man assaulting guests coming and going trying to rip them off with overpriced taxis when a metered cab is available for a tenth the price just outside the door.
