We stayed in villa El Paraiso at the end of December 2010. The main residence has an old Florida charm flavour, with big, cozy porch, beautiful views over matured sky-rocketing tropical trees and landscaped gardens. By being a builder I noticed a lovely personality touch in everything what you can see on the property (rarely observed in modern subdivision- style housing in US and Canada). This is what makes you feel “at home” from the very beginning and through the whole stay. Rooms are just the right size with “smart Caribbean” high ceilings, beds are comfy, bathrooms are impeccably clean (as the rest of the property), beach is clean and secluded with inviting grey sand and localized ocean pebbles to play. It was an unforgettable pleasure to spend the sundown on the beach – with Honduran mountains towering behind the sea waters and tranquility of the jungle surroundings. With small village located just beside the villa, it was very convenient to take the bikes (provided by the owner) and drive to local stalls for standard food purchases (like rice, eggs, bread, sugar, etc.). For more sophisticated shopping, you can use a car with chauffer provided by villa’s owner and drive to Omoa or Puerto Cortes. We preferred our rented in San Pedro Sula airport car just for the sake of freedom and convenience of exploring the country on our own. There is a good fish market in Puerto Cortes, where you can buy catch of the day by local fishermen. On the opposite side of the road there is an entrance to Rawakala Forest Reserve. The experience of swimming in the cold waters of the jungle fall was so rewarding, that the next day we decided to come back again (it is within walking distance to the villa, but I would advice to go there by car and park it at the entrance - saves you energy for exploring the trails). If you want to spend best minutes of your life in the solitude of the jungle, send kids with your husband to the zip-line (at the higher point of Rawakala mountain) and wait for them by the waterfall (1.5-2 hours). There is a deck-bridge over the river, just opposite the fall. If you love yoga – this is the perfect place to practice your asanas and experience the light of the nature. Or just relax and enjoy.
Special thanks to the people working at the villa. We had a guard (who I am sure was on the duty all the time, but diplomatically managed to be out of our sight and magically appeared when he was called), chauffer and housemaid. I was impressed by the amount of work our housemaid managed to perform during the day. She cooked, cleaned, washed, etc. for party of 15 people and always smiled! And to my immense pleasure – she doesn’t speak any English!!! If you want to practice or learn Spanish – this is a perfect situation, complete immersion. I have to stress on her cooking and catering skills – they are superb! Ask her to prepare a Honduran fish soup (mmm...), or mashed potato with baked parmesan topping, or even ask her advice on what she can present to you for the dinner – she is full of knowledgeable ideas!
Definitely try to find time for steam sauna. It is very relaxing. The pool by the side of the sauna is fed by natural spring water. I loved it’s design and it’s old charm. Once in a while, just for the difference, go to the restaurant of nearby hotel “El Paraiso”, they serve great food, my only complaint is the size of serving - it is too big, enough to feed 3 hungry people (I do not like to fill myself up to the neck point and at the same time do not like to leave leftovers on the plate).
Very pleasant stay. Kind, open-hearted Honduran people. Beautiful country.
