Description

Set in an attractive bay, the hotel boasts a view of the historical and monumental heart of Agrigento, at the foot of which lies the enchanting Valley of temples. Ideal for both the businessman and the tourist, it has 102 rooms of which 2 are junior suites, furnished in an elegant and subdued colour. All the bedrooms have balconies from which to admire the view over the sea or inland and all have air-conditioning and soundproofing. To the highest level of comfort, the rooms offer modern technology with outgoing fax capability, automatic alarm and the use of personal computers on request. Enclosed between the wings of the hotel are a covered garden and an American bar to enliven guests evenings. Founded in 581 BC by colonists from neighbouring Gela who named it Akragas, it rapidly grew in economic, civil and military importance, so much so that in league with Syracuse it vanquished the Carthaginian army at Imera in 480 BC and scaled down its expansionist ambitions. From this era the most imposing and important architectural remains, which put the city on the same artistic level as the most important Greek cities. The city is divided into two areas the modern urban centre and the Valley of the Temples, the ancient sacred territory which today has become a focus of historical and architectural interest. Without doubt the most spectacular surviving trace of ancient Akragas is the temple of Concordia. Built towards the middle of the 5th century and dedicated to the Dioscuri, the construction stands out imposingly in an amazing state of preservation in comparison with the temples of Paestum, it stands like the figure of God before that of a giant noted Goethe during his journey of 1787. The temple of the Dioscuri and that of Juno date from the same period. Utell Superior Selection - Offers the traveller quality rooms and facilities making their stay, whether business or leisure, relaxing and comfortable.

Ocean and Temples
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/17/06
Just got back from Sicily and stayed at this hotel. The location near the harbour was great. Super swimming pool with a great view of the Med and Agrigento. On the positive side, the room was clean and well equipped. It appears that the hotel serves local businesses as well as the tour bus crowd (I visited by Rent a Car). I was a bit disappointed overall. The dining room is essentially a collection of tables in what looks like a shopping mall - theres also what is described as an American bar which is a standalone bar sitting in the mall. They must have built a roof over the what was a central parking area of the hotel. We had a room at the front of the hotel and were woken up every morning by the tour buses idling - not to speak of the exhaust fumes. The staff were sullen, which was quite a surprise as I have found the locals in Sicily to be friendly and helpful. There is a small fish restaurant outside the gates of the hotel which is attached to a gas station believe it or not. They serve a fixed price multi dish fish and pasta meal with all the wine you can drink. This was a pleasant surprise. There are several other fair to good restaurants on the strip. If you have a car, its reasonably convenient to get to the temples.
