Cheap, but not worth the price!
I was directed to the Cashane Hotel by the Lonely Planet Guide. I wanted to visit Pilanesburg over a holiday weekend and Rustenburg was the closest I could get. The front desk manager was very nice and helpful, but I was somewhat disappointed with the hotel as it did not meet the description that the Lonely Planet gave. It is certainly not a new building and is somewhat worse for wear. There were no lights/lights were all burnt out in the stairwell, forcing one to use the antique elevator (only one of two is working).
The rooms themselves are also somewhat dated but clean. Given the overall state of the hotel, I chose to sleep in my camping sheet rather than under theirs, but that was probably because I was put off by the whole atmosphere. All four of the pillows in the room smelled of body odor that was very off putting and dismaying. The "color TV" required an antenna which mine did not have and only got one channel in poorly-received black and white (American wrestling to add insult to injury). The bedside lamps in my room were without lightbulbs (perhaps they were harvested for the stairwells before they burned out themselves!).
The hotel boasts a bar on the first floor that creates a lot of noise throughout the evening. I did not check out the bar, so I will not comment further. Lastly, in the morning, there was no water whatsoever. According to management, the water had gone out for the entire block, which is certainly not the fault of the hotel; however, the whole situation was poorly handled by the morning front desk clerk (not nearly as good as the manager). I was so upset with the overall experience at the Cashane that I left without even seeing how they could ruin their included breakfast.
Perhaps most disappointing was the response of the hotel manager and owner when I expressed my dissatisfaction. The manager was very understanding and reasonable and offered to talk to the owner to see if a rebate could be arranged. Nevertheless, I never heard back from the hotel. I contacted them several times over the next two and a half weeks, each time being told that the owner would call me herself, and yet I never received a call.
I am very disappointed with this hotel, to the point that I felt it necessary to post my only negative review of a hotel ever (especially as there was no information about the hotel online when I tried to research it myself).
It is cheap, but still not worth the stay!
