Nice beach front almost boutique hotel
Lone Pine is a higher-end, almost boutique type hotel, pricey for what you get but not outrageous. It is right on the beach. we stayed in a 1st floor (Americans take note: 2nd floor) room with two queen beds, enclosed "porch" room with shutters that opened up to garden / beach view. Good for a family. Bathroom with both shower and bathtub. Very nice. Attentive staff and grounds well maintained. Smallish pool could get a bit crowded. Penty of space in the lawn to play frisbie, etc. Public beach, with touts for water sports (but respectful -- not pestering -- when you said "no thanks"). Beach a bit dirty, but to be expected. Free shuttle several times a day to Straits Quay development and also E&O Hotel in George Town (both owned by the E&O group that owns the Lone Pine). Only complaints: First, breakfast included in price was only for two persons, not for the family, so kids have to pay extra (boo!). Second, room rather musty smelling, probably because of use of dark wood for bed headboard (dark attracts mildew) and curtains. Would I stay here again? Yes, depending on price. Note: They do a good business with weddings, given picturesque setting.
