Coach Trip with David Urquhart October 2008
Hotel excellent value for money, comfortable rooms, food good, entertainment excellent, staff very friendly. Second trip this year, can't wait for the next one
We recently passed through Braemar and stopped for lunch at the Fife Arms Hotel. All I can say is this was the worst meal I have ever paid for in my life. It is no wonder tourists are dissapointed with Scotland if this is the standard they can expect. The food was very poor and the portions miniscule. The menu in no way reflected what was available however we were expected to work this out for ourselves. The two members of staff on duty clearly did not want to be there. The way in which one of the staff treated an elderly gentleman who was ordering lunch was embarassing. We had two young children with us and a childrens menu was allegedly available however we were made to feel that it was a total inconveniece havin the kids there and very little of the menu was actually available.
We saw this hotel a week ago and thought that it looked a great place to go for a night just to have a drink, relax and enjoy the scenery.
After trying to book in the hotel and being told they don't take bookings and going home to phone the booking line, eventually after a few days someone contacted us thining we wanted to book a coach trip.
Finally we got booked for the one night and looked forward to getting there.
At first glance our room looked great until I stepped into the loo and found this to be a bit dirty and very outdated.
Still optimistic we went for a drink to the bar where the staff generally looked at us like we had horns or took ages to serve us. Not one to be put off we continued til food time. After going out for dinner, we were welcomed back to the hotel with a band which as I wasn't feeling too good decided to pass on and have a quiet night in our room watching one of the 9 channels which the hotel said we could get.
Well....after 30 minutes and one channel which was the news we gave up and went for a bath, pleasant enough til tried to run the water away and found the plug hole clogged with what looked like years worth of slime hair and general disgustingness!
Feeling rather disheartened a good nights sleep seemed our final option. HA thats what we thought....our room was directly above the bar and aforementioned band played at 1000 decibels til the wee hours of the morning vibrating through the floor and making my sore head much worse. When the noise eventually subsided, the bed was comfy and good nights sleep did follow.
Got up to have our brekkie and it was good although there was a limited choice.
All in all a very over rated hotel which being linked to David Urqhuart I thought would be friendly and at least clean for the money we paid. Yeah I know at £70 I was never gonna get Buckingham palace but really cleanliness doesnt cost much and sticking us in a room which even sleeping beauty would be awakened in really isnt worth making an extra few pounds at the weekend then getting a not too great review.
I did consider complaining at reception but there was noone there to complain to and the only staff we did speak to seemed to have difficulty understanding english.
Not too great and dont see us going back anytime soon unless a major refurbishment is done or they take many large bottles of domestos to the place!! Sorry!!
