My in-laws were the first people to buy in when this time share opened. I first stayed there with my wife in 1998,, and have been back MANY times since.
If you're looking for a full-service resort, then this is not the place for you. However, if you want to get away from it all and just relax, it doesn't get any better. Every unit has a full kitchen, microwave, blender, washer/dryer, and TV with cable. They just recently added wi-fi, so bring your laptop.
Yes, you definitely need a car if you want to do any shopping or sight-seeing (taxis aren't that expensive, but it adds up). Be prepared to drive on the left in a car designed to drive on the right. This can get a little unnerving, especially when someone tries to pass you.
The ocean view is dramatic, especially at sunset. You can watch all manner of boats and ships pass by - cruise ships, sailboats, container ships, etc. The water is crystal clear, and the beach is one of the best on the island. At high tide, you can walk out over 50' from the water's edge, and still be only 4' deep (you can't go any further and stand up, as the sand gives way to coral), though the snorkling is great. I've even seen some folks go spear-fishing. At low tide, a huge sandbar emerges from the water, making a great place to play in the sand with young children (especially if they like mud!).
As for the island itself, if you know what to expect, you'll be fine. It's not the cleanest, but, honestly, is your town completely trash-free? The locals are VERY laid back, and truly do exist on "island time." All times seem to be approximate when it comes to scheduling. I've seen reviews that say the people are rude, but they're very friendly if you treat them with the same respect that you expect. Service can be slow at restaurants, but, if you plan for it, it's not an issue.
If you ever get the chance to be on the island for Valentine's Day, I highly recommend a trip into Port Lucaya for the night. The locals treat it almost like a national holiday. Every wears their sharpest clothes (generally red or white, with a little black mixed in), they have a concert at the band stand, and the bars are hopping!
All in all, this is a great place to stay. It can be expensive at times (remember, EVERYTHING is imported; US brands tend to be the most expensive, despite being the closest suppliers, so buy British or Canadian versions if available), but that's because there are no sales or income taxes. The people are friendly, and the beach is beautiful. I'm now raising my second child as a part-time Bahamian, and I'd strongly recommend that you do the same!
Hi my name is Joan, i have been to Freeport 3 times this year and this was my favorite place that I stayed this year. the resort was lovely the view was great, and the atmosphere was perfect. The beach was beautiful. the pool is 9 feet deep and large, so you can have a real swim. I loved everything about this resort and would recommend it any time. If you are looking for a quiet romantic peaceful place to vacation this is it. My honey and I loved it here. When I go back in Febuary will be staying there again. Cant say enough about this place. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
I have been going to the Mayfield almost yearly for the last 20 years because it provides the kind of seclusion that you can't buy elsewhere. If you are tired of crowded and commercial beaches than this is the place for you. It is still close to commercial areas if that is your desire.
This will be our 7th trip to Mayfield [although we were hurricaned out 2 yrs ago]. It offers a truly relaxing vacation with a homey location. Staff is efficient, but does not hover. Units are spacious and clean. Mayfield may not be a sleek, upscale resort, but it is well run and suits our needs perfectly. Can't wait to get there again on Sept. 15, 2007!
We own 10 weeks of timeshare. My entire family and I have gone all over the world on exotic vacations. But, the Mayfield experience has been and continues to be the most relaxing and spacious of all. Everytime I take someone on vacation with us, they all try to buy a week.
If you want to enjoy the island for shopping, entertainment and pure beauty, be sure to have a car.
As for the island population, we have gone for over 18 years and have NEVER had a problem, Only Friends...
I liked the beautiful beach and private area, away from the noise and traffic. If you want to go anywhere, you must have car, however, you cannot fully enjoy the island without traveling around. The maid service was great and the staff very helpful. I would recommend this resort to any family or couple that want time together.
This place was great for my family, because beach was very quit and private. You could actually seat in your room and watch the kids at the pool or on the beach, it sits that close to the beach. Great Place.....
The room was great, plenty of space and clean for family or friends. Maid service once a week,
that sure was not sufficient for my wife and I.This place is geared for a budget minded
We would never go back to Mayfield Beach and
The surrounding areas were destroyed by hurricanes very unsightly. It' also to far from town if you don't drive.
The resort it's self was well kept and clean.
But there is still room for improvement.
