Great Fun and Convenient
Island House is as close to the waves as you can get, literally footsteps away. This makes swimming excursions less of a journey.
Many places are "on the beach" on Padre Island or Mustang Island/Port Aransas, but a lot of them are set back so far you have to walk two or three football fields on a boardwalk over the dunes, dragging all your stuff, before you actually get to the water. If you have small kids, you know how tiring this can be.
Everything in the kitchen worked, the internet hookup was plug and go, the bathrooms adequate, and the beds comfortable.
It's an older place, so if you are pre-disposed to being disappointed and picky about minor things such as older decor and finish out, older furniture, and plain vanilla rooms, find a newer place. If you just want to have fun in a great location for a reasonable price, and you are tolerant of the limitations of an older (eighties?) condo rental, the Island House can't be beat. It's just a terrific location and a fun atmosphere.
The Holiday Inn next door has an outdoor cabana with live music and a bar during summers, and a restaurant.
The water on this part of the island is great - perfect for the kids. We swam in the Island House pool a couple of times and it was nice also - always lots of other kids and moms and dads. The beach was not crowded. There were a lot of people, but plenty of room to find our own spot.
We didn't use the outdoor grilling area, but saw lot of other people taking advantage of it. It's a huge gas grill setup and most people just brought their stuff down for grilling, and then took it back up to the room. Next time, I'll bring stuff for the grill.
The room was adequate with a great view of the gulf. We were on a north side unit. Our unit had a few minor problems, which the staff corrected right away.
The master in our room had just a shower. I think all the rooms are like that. No biggie for us, but some people might want a luxury bath. The hall bath has a standard tub. The master bedroom was not very private. This is a trade-off for the view as the entire living/master side of the unit is ocean view with windows, and if a wall were put between the master/living, it would block a good portion of the ocean view from the living area in side units. Instead, there is a sliding louvered wall which can be closed. It offers visual privacy but no sound privacy. We worked around this but if you need a private escape from the kids, with a door that locks and has sound privacy, you might want to give the kids the master and take the back room.
The staff was friendly and helpful. We'll no doubt stay there again.
