Beautiful setting in BFE!
The Chateau was great for relaxing and not having to worry about keeping yourself too busy. The hiking trails are very scenic and of course the cave is a neat place. Sure not the most breath taking cave I've been in, but for a first-time caver it's definitely really cool if you don't get sick due to the lack of oxygen in the cave (not uncommon to experience).
The lodge is rustic, old and creaky, but has lots of charm. It's currently being updated with up modern insulated walls (may want to ask about getting an updated room). Our experience was wonderful with everything. Just a few things I should mention:
-There are not signs on the winding road leading to lodge acknowledging that you're on the right track. Just keep going and you'll run into it (I almost turned around thinking I was lost).
-I believe the doors to the lodge close at 10:00 pm and I don't think you can check in after that since the doors are locked. If you go outside in the middle of the night, you'll have to ring a door bell and wake the on-call desk clerk to let you back in (very embarrassing).
-There is no elevator in the lodge. You'll have to hike your luggage up the stairs which isn't loads of fun when you're packing two other woman's bags to the 3rd floor ;)
-No cell service with AT&T. Don't expect to make a lot of calls from the lodge via cell. Another in my party has Verizon and was able to get a half of a bar in the middle of the parking lot standing on one leg with a coat hanger in hand.
-The food is amazing! Everything is home made and is absolutely wonderful! We had buffalo lasagna, smoked salmon, halibut and crab cakes. It was all very VERY good! In the diner the wait is long for breakfast and lunch, but is very worth it! Don't miss out on their shakes! Wow! Didn't have any complaints.
