Fool me once...
From all indications on the hotel's web site, the Biltmore Suites is supposed to be a quaint little Victorian hotel. I got the impression that it might be like a B & B, only on a larger scale. Oh how wrong I was. The neighborhood is fairly run-down with vacant lots and buildings on the surrounding blocks. From the moment we set foot in the building (by ducking under several overhanging tree branches and an aging awning), we were inundated by grime and decay. Cracked and chipped plaster lay on the stairs to the lobby. Worn out carpeting shivered under our feet. We had to climb about 5 flights of stairs to get to our room because, according to the clerk, the "elevator" could not accommodate two people plus one suitcase each. I'm not sure we would have wanted to risk the elevator in any event, given the age of the equipment and the signals we were receiving from all around us. Our room met our hastily re-conceived notions very well. Rotten window molding and sashes. Peeling wallpaper hanging from at least two walls. Dust everywhere. Cracked plaster. This was not Victorian chic, it was a Victorian mess. It was one of those rooms where you are afraid to touch anything because it just looks and feels filthy. The beds were low, worn out and very uncomfortable. We laughed at ourselves for falling into the Biltmore's trap. After calling other hotels in the area and determining they were just too expensive or too booked, we resigned ourselves to two restless nights.
About the only positive thing I can say about this hotel is that it is only about 1.5 blocks from a light rail stop, which takes you into parts of Baltimore actually worth spending time.
