Old does not have to mean falling apart
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/24/11
Wallpaper was pealing off the walls in the bathroom. The finish was worn off the bathroom fixtures. There were holes in hallway ceiling. Their website that my room had ppv movies and a mini bar, it had neither. There were only two hangers in the closet. The faucet leak a lot of water when I turned on the hot water. The queen room was small but the size was fine for just one person. The staff was friendly and the location was great. I used to work at a much older hotel in Chicago so I know that an old hotel does not have to mean old dilapidated rooms. There are much better places to stay.

Never will go back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/16/10
This is the first time I have ever wrote a reveiw for a hotel. I was very disappointed in this hotel. The only thing good about the hotel was the location and the bell hops. The people behind the counter where rude from the beginning. they act like they where doing you a favor just to talk to you. The rooms where fairly clean but for being a five star hotel is an insult to the other five stars I have stayed in. The cleaning ladies where in our room before 10:00 am. We had to get our stuff and use the bathroom while they where there. We just got back from breakfast. It took them 25 minutes to get our car. They where not honest about the $199.00 Colts package. (hidden cost) I would recommend staying in a Holiday inn express for the same money. I will never go back. Sorry but that's the plain truth.

Thank You Canterbury Hotel
By Celaine, 7/25/10
Thank You Canterbury Hotel‎‎ Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 By celaineygirl - Jul 25, 2010 My husband and I came out from Norton, OH and stayed in the Canterbury Hotel for our honeymoon in Indianapolis, IN on July 10th, 2010. We chose the Canterbury Hotel because of all the hotels in the area we looked at online, it was full of character and history. All others in the area were overly modern and sterile looking; anything but warm and welcoming. We wondered about the negative reviews we read about the Canterbury Hotel, and the validity of them, but were willing to try it anyway. Let me tell you we do not have one ounce of regret. Any negative review we read flew out of our minds on first sight. The Canterbury is beautiful and elegant in every detail. The pictures on the website pale in comparison to standing there and drinking it all in. The service, from the moment we arrived was beyond excellence. Working with a newly married budget, we booked a regular queen room with a carriage ride. Our jaws were agape to find our room was upgraded to an 8th floor parlor suite (Room 806) as a gift to us. The very room shown on the site, a room we longed for but couldn't afford at the time, was ours for the two nights we stayed. It was spacious, clean, and luxurious. We felt lavished and cared for throughout our stay. (Thank you Leyla and Chris-smiles) We enjoyed our carriage ride and enjoyed dinner Sun night at St. Elmo's Steakhouse right next door; something we looked forward to after reading about the restaurant on the hotel website. We enjoyed breakfast each am in the hotel restaurant. The food was fresh, hot and delicious and the service exquisite. The staff even went the extra mile when I came down for breakfast late the 1st am, being hospitable in every way. (Thank you Eric!) Thank you Canterbury Hotel for the forever memories. We look at our pictures with fond remembrance. We strongly recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone. Other negative reviews about small rooms, things falling apart, questionable service or whatever else they may be about, are all nonsense. The moment you walk in the front door (opened for you by classy and courteous doormen), you will KNOW IT and the only thing you will be able to say is WOW. Thank You again Canterbury Hotel-for EVERYTHING. Looking forward to our next stay already, Dave and Celaine Gruver

What a dump...
By not important, 6/6/09
I travel alot for business and use priceline all the time. I am not particular about my hotels so priceline works great for saving money. I booked The Canterbury for $60 and feel like I overpaid by $40. The room was tiny - which I don't really care about but also had no desk to work on. The carpet was sticky; had no coffee pot nor a ironing board or iron. To get ice I had to order it from room service for a charge. The only things going for it was the doorman/bellstaff and location. It's right next to St. Elmo's right in Centre Point and connected to the mall. To rate this a 4 star is an insult to all the other true 4 stars out there.

Loved the room.
By mrsfishermac, 4/28/09
The hotel was beautiful, our room was beautiful! BUT if you want anything, like ice, you have to call room service or pay an outrageous amount of money to get something from the cooler in your room. There was not even a coffee maker in the room!

Desperately needs an remodel!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/20/08
I have never written a hotel review before but I felt strongly about this hotel so here I am. I stayed at The Canterbury last week. When I called to confirm my reservation it rang about 20 times before someone picked up. The front desk staff was not welcoming or warm, however the bellmen were exceptional, lovely and helpful. Simply stated, the hotel smells bad and it desperately needs a remodel. It was last redone in the 80's and it looks it! It felt dirty in my room and I just wanted to stay away from the room until the last possible moment when I had to sleep. I couldn't get a refund as I had purchased on Orbitz. Believe me, I would have found a better place to stay. The decor is awful (it does NOT look like the pictures) and the room simply did not feel clean or look clean. Mold in the shower, horrible linens and lumpy pillows. HOWEVER, THE HOTEL RESTAURANT HAS EXCELLENT FOOD FOR DINNER! I was shocked! THE FOOD WAS INCREDIBLE AND THE SERVICE PERSONABLE AND VERY FRIENDLY. The breakfast was not so great the next morning but they tried. I don't know how I got incredible coffee for dinner in a coffee press and then awful mudwater drip coffee the next morning. Curious! All in all, FIND A BETTER HOTEL TO STAY IN but HAVE DINNER HERE if you'd like to get a feel for this historic hotel. Remember, the only thing historic about it is the bones of the building itself - i.e. newer windows and newer doors but an antique elevator . The furnishings are awful 80's reproductions and you will be disappointed if you are looking for an antique feel and even somewhat luxurious appointments. It is in a great location but so are all of the hotels in downtown Indy.

Medical Graduation
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/08
Everything was just wonderful at the Canterbury Hotel for this memorable event! We had family and friends gather for our son's medical school graduation from Friday through Sunday. I would highly recommend the Hotel for any occasion you would like to celebrate! We were able to just sit back and relax while the hotel staff had everything organized for the luncheon and breakfast served privately to our guests. A number one choice!

Be careful what you wish for
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/26/08
For years I have wanted to stay at the Canterbury. My husband and I celebrated Valentine's Day in a shoe box of a room, with a very lumpy mattress, thin sheets/blankets/pillows and a bathroom with dirt and mold on the tiles. I'm all for charm and old things, but I was very disappointed with the hotel. We've stayed at numerous older facilities, but we could not overlook the many shortcomings that made our stay memorable, but not for the right reasons. We will not be back.......

GREAT LOCATION WITH AMBIENCE
By KenK, 1/8/08
My wife and I recently reserved a standard room with a queen size bed through Yahoo Travel and got a terrific deal. We only stayed for a Saturday night when not a whole lot was going on in Indianapolis, but still the downtown was active and vibrant and we had a great view from our 10th floor room. The hotel is fairly intimate with attractive interior features. The doormen were extremely helpful and valet parking is a must. Front desk personnel were equally helpful. Our room was fairly small but nice with a 4-post bed. We didn't use our small stocked refrigerator, but it is a nice feature. Once settled in, we noticed that there was no soap in the bathroom and only one wine glass (no beverage glasses) but a call to the front desk promptly took care of that. The room was clean, but the ceiling above the tub showed some minor wear and tear. The TV is adequate, and check-out the next mornnig was prompt and very professional. There is no continental breakfast, but guests are surrounded by restaurants and have their own private sheltered entrance into Circle Centre. Overall, a great place for a weekend getaway and we will definitely be going back.

Canterbury a real disappointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/17/07
I booked this hotel based on some online reviews but am wondering if I stayed at the same place as the folks who give it rave reviews. When I arrived a little before 3 pm there were no rooms ready because "they were full the night before and the cleaning staff hadn't finished cleaning." On my second day I returned to my room at 5 pm only to discover that it had not yet been cleaned ... again because "the cleaning staff had not yet gotten to it because they had a full house the night before." The hotel has wireless service, but if you're having trouble logging on don't count on the staff to know where you can go for assistance and there's no information in your room. It's obvious that the place was once elegant but some of the now-soiled in-room furniture and decor needs a face lift. Bottom line: not worth a premium price.
