Star Express Inn, Valparaiso

there was dirt around the bottom of the bed and stands , the bathroom seemed to be half clean , faucets seemed dirty , far from shiny. the elevator didn't work , being disabled , they didn't have ground floor rooms , so walking up stairs was a problem. there was no morning breakfast provided , so don't expect it . there was one trash can in the whole room , bathroom. the fridge we had , wouldn't keep anything cold .and there was someones mc donalds in there when we checked in . there was one customer that pointed out a swastika hanging on the wall behind the desk clerk. and the water did taste funny and the tub was half clogged , you stood in water to shower one good thing it does allow dogs! I think id shop further for a room next time .

We stayed here in the mid-90's and it was great. What a difference time makes. When I checked in, the rate was different (more) than was quoted over the phone when I made the reservation. The shower water temperature started out luke warm, but rapidly changed to ice cold as if they ran out of hot water. I decided not to stay and expected an adjustment on the room rate since I pointed out that aside from a towel and wash cloth, the room was sellable. The front desk clerk told me he didn't want me to come back. No worries there. Stay at better lodging further east on US30!!!

Carpet looked like they poured Arm n Hammer on a damp carpet. Stunk! A/C sounded like a Mac Truck everytime it turned on. CS was really bad---Agent says we had 2 dogs and will have to pay $50 extra. We had no dogs. Was offered to check our cars---he wouldn't listen. Dad and CS got in huge argument, he refuses to call manager, I thought they may even come to blows. CS threatens to call Police--Dad says go ahead this is fraud. Folks--you get the idea--Spend the extra $20 and get a better Hotel or drive an extra 30 miles to another. This Hotel is bad news and turned into a real nightmare. Incredible!

Booked us the wrong room. The room we did get was nasty dirty. Water damage, cob webs, dirt and dust. Room looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks. Bad smell. Stains everywhere. Cig burn holes in the comforter in our non-smoking room. Such a filthy place. Moved to the Red Roof for the remainder of our stay.

The staff was very friendly since our arrival. The room was clean and they allowed pets to stay with us! The price paid for the room very reasonable.

Dirty floors,towels thin and stained,smelled of smoke as soon as you entered,staff not sure how to check out customer and took way too long,pillows terrible.would not recommend.

The location was the only good part to this hotel. The lobby was dirty with mud on the floors. My nonsmoking room smelled like an ashtray. The sheets were stained and had burn holes in them. The shower had mold around the caulking, and the toilet kept running nonstop. The carpet was old, torn in places and stained. There was no pool. The 24 hour "gym" had 1 multi unit nautilus which was broken, one treadmill and one stationary bike. The 1st floor had one candy machine and it had an "out of order" sign on it. The cable T.V. wasn't working properly and not all the channels could be seen. The wireless internet did not work at all. The breakfast was very very minimal, and the coffee tasted gross. I observed bugs walking on the lobby floor and breakfast room during breakfast. The trash cans were full and needed to be emptied. The attendant was working the breakfast station and working the desk. She did not wash her hands or even wear disposable gloves while handling the food. I left and ate elsewhere I paid $89.00 for my room, but it was clearly not worth it, next time I will stay in Merrillville or Hobart.

The staff was nice and helpful. However, this is a small hotel. We stayed on the third floor. I requested a non-smoking room, which I recieved. When we walked off the elevator, there was a strong smoke smell. Most of the rooms on the floor were smoking rooms. There were 4 non-smoking rooms. Therefore, the room smelled anyway. I have not been to a hotel before that had smoking and non-smoking rooms next to each other on the same floor or at least in the same wing. Also, when I went to turn down my sheets, I found hairs all over them. They brought me new sheets but it grossed me out a bit. The price is pretty cheap. We stayed for $70. But, I don't think I'll be going back.
