Definitely NOT What I Expected
My fiancee and I made the mistake of staying here during the fourth of July weekend. Well actually, I made the hotel arrangements so the mistake was mine, much to my fiancee's chagrin. After perusing their site, viewing photos of property, etc. I felt this would be a pretty good weekend stay... how wrong I was. From the moment we entered the room we both knew something wasn't right.
First, it is apparent that this is an older hotel with signs that a meager attempt was made to upgrade/refurbish it (although I'm really just giving them the benefit of the doubt) and to be perfectly honest it's more of a motel than hotel. I suggest a do over in the refurbishing department... seriously! Immediately upon entering the room the smell was quite moldy and stuffy and I imagine the outdated carpeting didn't help either. The toilet was the old fashioned kind with the the steel handle which made an abnormally loud sound when flushed and the tub while adequate didn't drain fast enough while showering which obviously caused water build-up.
In our attempt to get rid of the moldy room smell, our first resort was to turn on the air conditioner which I'm sure hasn't been replaced since the hotel was probably first built and as such was totally ineffective - not to mention it cut off repeatedly and the air itself was less than cold. Fortunately we were able to open the window (thank goodness it was summer and cool at night). The few amenties the hotel offers just don't measure up when you're residing in a subpar room. That said, they do offer free internet service (in room) laundry service (they do it for you, no self serve) and a bar and restaurant on site. The morning breakfast buffet they offer however comes with vouchers they give you which they stick on your bill but fail to list it as a separate charge - another reason to always check your bill... ALWAYS! Thankfully we didn't use them (returned them upon checkout) and as such can't vouch for the quality of the breakfast.
We had so much to do in Chicago that we didn't have to spend a great deal of time in the room other than unwinding from the long day(s) activities and resting. Nonetheless, I totally expected more from this hotel without having done the required research (that I normally do) and got burned. Now based on some places I've stayed previously I will say that things could have been much worse. The staff was friendly and accomodating and considering the issues with the room housekeeping was more than adequate. And the price was on par with hotel quality. But as I said, part of the fault rests with me for not being as mindful in reviewing the establishment ahead of time - lesson learned.
If you must stay here in a pinch you can do so without worrying about your safety but that's as far as I'm willing to go with it when honestly there are better offerings in the area. Reviews may not be everything when it comes to deciding on a hotel stay but as a general rule, majority rules and it always pays to do a little research as you can save yourself major headaches. Don't ruin an otherwise decent vacation with a subpar hotel stay which is totally avoidable. Bottom line... do yourself a favor and keep it moving.
