Bugs Galore!
By ,
My wife and I stayed there (I should say stayed long enough to try two rooms after the first had bugs, the second did too) we had to find another hotel late in the evening. Luckily we did. Not much has changed I see since we were there more than 8 years ago. Still dirty, still full of bugs, mostly in the bed! Check under the sheets.

A bit expensive but nice
By ,
It was a bit expensive for my price range. However, the place was nice. Especially, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They answered all my questions patiently. And even provided me a discount rate for further stay in Uncle Billy's at Kona. The morning breakfast is bit a joke. Since it provided only toast and papaya. No eggs, cereal or bagle etc.

We can't wait to go back. In October
By ,
We felt so comfortable and at home here. We had been in Oahu for most of our vacation and only stayed at Uncle Billy's one night. when we returned home we kept talking about Uncle Billy's we never once thought about the hotel in Oahu... We felt like part of a family there. I loved the atmosphere. it felt so very comfortable.

Bed Bugs galore
By ,
We check in at night and dropped off our luggage in the room and then went to dinner. After dinner we returned to the room and noticed hair on the pillow. I remembered a CNN story of bed bugs after seeing the hair. I stripped my bed and my friends bed and found them, bed bugs and egg casing. We called the front desk and informed them of this issue. Within in a few minutes a service person showed up and looked for him self. I asked have you had bed bugs before and the person replied not a months. We check out and left, never to return. We slept in our car which we felt was better then being dinner for the bugs.

It's So Tropical
By ,
Of all the tourists stops in this state this is probably the one you should mark on your calendar as the one to come and kick back and enjoy from! The weather is not your typical Hawaiian weather, you know the sun and fun stuff, it is actually pretty unpredictable. The water is close by everywhere. The shades of green in the lush tropical flora is wonderful for the eye to behold. [Probably because of the unpredictable weather.] The sounds of nature [some have referred to as noisy birds] is much preferred to the hustle and bustle of traffic sounds or emergency vehicles blaring their sirens or the overhead sounds of air traffic where I am from. The rooms? Open, spacious with modestly appointed dcor. The porches off each room overlook the botanical garden and some of them have a really beautiful view of the bay. Very homey feeling. There is a restaurant at the hotel that has a diversity in their menu choices that sort of meets everyones taste preferences. Each time we went we enjoyed watching the patrons enjoy the dinner show. You are actually invited up to learn to do a Hula dance. A little something for everyone. One last thing, one of the things we really enjoy is the approach to this hotel. No matter which way you come into it the street is covered with a canopy of really old Banyan Trees which creates the first sort of mental and sensory image of how your visit to Hilo is going to turn out. Yes! This hotel has its challenges, it is an aged facility. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels like the real Hawaii this is it. The staff here is friendly and helpful like their hotel in Kona. The fresh tropical flowers displayed all over the lobby are a nice touched too. I read these reviews here and ask myself? When I am there is it for the Hawaiian Experience or as a room inspector. Think about it, a room in Hawaii for under a hundred bucks? Did you even think you could find it? P.S. Our towels were not thread bare, we saw no buggies, the room didnt stink and the sounds of nature were beautiful.

Far from a \"Resort\"!
By ,
The pictures of the lobby and gardens look great, but the room did not live up to those images. We found the room old and dirty looking. Carpet was stained, worn and torn. Windows were old style crank of several glass panes which do not close all the way, so I still felt like I might as well be sleeping outside. Bugs in the room as well and an old odor. Very little parking. The location is ideal, close to downtown and the airport. I would have paid more for a clean, indoor room.

local who stays there
By ,
I live here and have had to stay there a few times. First time, i was like oh, guess you get what you paid for. Then had to stay again cause my car broke down, they accomodated me quickly. Its a room, with great service people. You don't need much, you're sleeping there, period. Then get out and see the beauty. it wasn't loud, unless crying kids are near by. it has the neccessary stuff; beds (need new pillows, little hard), i had no bugs, get the non smoking room, they stink otherwise (and I am a smoker)...its cheap what can i say

I would stay again
By ,
The place is old and not a luxury hotel, but for the price and location it is great. The rooms were clean and we got maid service everday. They were all friendly and full of information. The best was the location, we walked to downtown, the parks and farmer's market and it is a great drive to anywhere on the island. I would stay there again.

Convenient, clean, cheap
By ,
The staff was GREAT--helpful & friendly--and this was a clean, cheap place just to shower, sleep, and use as a launching pad. Convenient location! We were gone all day every day. Nice to have a little general store on the premises with reasonable prices on basic and souvenirs. Ocean view from balcony. Mattresses (and some pillows) were soft and lumpy. The cleaning staff seemed to forget every day that we needed 4 towels &cups.
