Not as advertised.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/01/07
Wow, where to begin? 1. Lock on Bathroom door doesn't work. 2. Sliding door in bedroom is broken. 3. Sliding screen door to lanai from living room doesn't lock and has small tears in the screen allowing lots of mosquitoes into the room. 4. Air conditioner is set up on a timer and motion sensor so that it turns off if you leave, you're not in the living room or if you're out on the lanai. This makes returning to your room uncomfortable after a long day out and about. 5. The beach is beautiful but a bit of a hike (my wife and I are in good shape and like to walk so it wasn't a problem for us but I could see how it might be for other's less inclined). 6. Room was clean but generally run-down (old and poorly maintained). 7. We haven't found out how they're getting in, but every morning my wife and I awaken to a host of new mosquito bites. 8. The mattresses on the beds (we were given a room with two twin beds) are old and the mattress pads lump up and shift. 9. Use of the in-room safe cost us and additional $1.75 (no, I"m not kidding...) 10. Car parking can be a problem if you return to the hotel later in the evening, when I asked one of the staff what we should do in the event we weren't able to find a parking space he just shrugged his shoulders. We leave for home this coming Thursday and I'm pretty sure it will be one of the happier days of my life. I wish I could be kinder since we were looking forward to this trip for almost a year but frankly, this place has been a terrible disappointment.

A disappointment and waste of $$
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/06/07
I wouldn't suggest anyone who wants to be near anything like water, shopping, food (their restaurant is awful, their chef just quit) condo was not clean, very worn, air conditioning didn't work in one of the bedrooms. No wait staff at the pool, so don't get thirsty while your swim. Staff for most part was polite, but not trained well, couldn't even print a boarding pass, had to go up to the front desk at 3am to print it off, too far from beach, had to wait for the shuttle to come pick us up, couldn't take cars near your lodging, no where near the beach. You have to take their shuttle to get to the beach, so it isn't convenient to take much more than a towel, and there are no beach chairs or aminities. It is right next to the Princeville Resort, but you are only allowed to buy drinks at their bar, not use their facilities. So there isn't much more than sand if you stay at Hanalea Bay area. Never been so disappointed in a facility and location in all the years we have traveled. It is totally misrepresented when one checks on their advertisements. Our neighbors went a week before us, and they said the same things we did, very disappointing!!! If we go again we will stay in the south part of the island. It is convenient, well appointed, nice hotels. The place I would stay in the North would be Princeville Resort, it was beautiful, elegant and very convenient.

Great Location but Hotel Needs Work
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/08/07
This is our second time at the Hanalei Bay Resort. Our first time 11 years ago was excellent as the resort was well cared for and in good condition. However, we've just returned from our second visit this June, which sadly, pales in comparison. The owners of this resort are sitting on property that is well located, the grounds are beautiful, and the setting is ideal. However, they have stopped investing any time or money on the rooms, restaurant, bar and service levels. I believe they put 100% of their efforts on the groundskeeping, which is great, but they need to spruce up the rooms, paint, clean and update the interiors. Our room was musty, dirty, and outdated. Another complaint would be that while we were in what I consider a "standard hotel room" they consider it a "condo", so they don't clean you room daily. I find this to be a cop-out and a way to cut corners. Their front desk staff wasn't rude, but came across as indifferent and uninterested. This is not the "aloha" welcome vacationers desire. If you decide to stay here, you will love the location, the grounds, and the pool. I would return only because of the location.

You can't beat this place!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/11/07
This place was a step out of the typical hotel and right in line with a tropical paradise hotel. The views were incredible and the beach was a very short walk down a path. Did I already mention the views!

Old Hawaii at its best, but I don't want you to go there...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/13/07
I don't want to recommend this resort to anyone....because I don't want anyone else to compromise my ability to get a reservation there. It is absolutely beautiful, quiet, old Hawaii at its best, and with excellent (though moderately expensive) food. A first class place--recommended for the sophisticated older set, not the rowdy, nor those requiring constant attention. There is no nightlife, no nightclubs, and you are going to have to go elsewhere for go carts, video games, and theaters. Don't go here, because I don't want to share it.....

Oahu Resident
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/29/07
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!! What you won't be told when you make your reservation is that you will be charged an additional $35/day if you want room cleaning and an additional $10/day if you need towels. Staff are rude and management... what management? Trust a local and don't stay here.

Best View on the Island
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/15/07
We've been to Kauai several times, and the 2nd time we decided to stay here. Never stayed anywhere else since. There's nothing like the view of Bali Hai while drinking cocktails at Happy Talk lounge, or eating breakfast at Bali Hai restaurant. I'm partial to the North shore because it's so stunning, so this is the perfect location for me. It's very clean and there's always a perfect smell or site.

We like the laid back atmosphere. Wonderful pool and great restaurant. The views are just wonderful. Wish we could go back at least once a year.

Horrible Experience!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/03/07
We went to Kauai for a wedding in the North, and this place and Princeville seem to be the only two places you can find accommodations. The resort is a timeshare resort, which means the units are kept up by the individual owners. The unit we were in was a disgrace - old carpet and dingy paint, broken furniture, old bed and womens hygienic products in the cupboard. We complained to management that we wanted a new room but they kept saying the "manager wasn't in". After enough screaming, the manager finally showed himself but said they were booked solid and offered us a free round of drinks at the bar! The resort has incredible grounds with lush gardens, fountains, waterfalls etc, but the rooms and the management are pathetic. This was by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a resort, and I would highly recommend that you not stay here.
