Not a chance I will return

Before I begin, please understand that I know this motel is NOT a 5-star hotel, but our experience was terrible. First, we were overcharged, it was only by $6, but it was still more than what I was quoted. At check in, the desk man took my printed (personal) vacation plans that had all our conf #'s, maps, and car rental info (including cc #'s) and stood behind the glass reading through all of it. This may sound petty, but added in with the rest of the issues, it bothered me. On to the room itself, it was nasty. The bathroom had not been cleaned, as there were pieces of toilet tissue, a shampoo lid, and a dirty q-tip on the floor. This only leads me to wonder how clean the rest of the room really was. (keep in mind, we arrived at 2:30am after a 18 hr drive, and I had not discovered any of this until the next morning, otherwise I would have changed rooms then or just not stayed at all) The last issue is what concerns me the most, at about 11:30pm the next night (oh yeah, we had prepaid for 2 nights since that was what was confirmed, and told no refunds are available)the smoke alarm starts going off, my 15yr old nephew goes to the office for help while my husband & I try to stop the awful beeping, and returns with this response: "I cannot help", needless to say, I am then calling the front desk, apparently we were interruping or annoying the person on duty, as I was greeted with a deep sigh, and am told to remove the battery. At this point I am livid. It took us the better part of 20 minutes to get this to stop, as removing the battery, somehow did not rectify the situation. I found that the hotel management was not concerned for our, or the other guests safety, and obviously was not worried about the possibility of the place burning down. When we checked out I questioned the overcharges, and asked for a manager to discuss the stay,I was told he was not available until the next day,and he was the only one who could help me. We then moved on to Howard Johnson up the street for our last 2 nights in town, and could not have asked for better service. My advice to anyone visiting Athens, drive right past America's Best Inns, and dont look back!
