Loved our stay at Doubletree
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/26/09
We just got back from a wonderful stay at the Doubletree. They picked us up from the airport so we didn't have to rent a car. We were greeted by friendly staff and received some of those wonderful cookies. We were able to walk to town and enjoyed some of the restaurants and had a wonderful time exploring the shops and riding the Polar Express. Our daughter loved swimming in the indoor pool and playing in the snow behind the hotel. We really enjoyed eating breakfast with the great view from the dining room of the Animas river and the mountain. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. We would definitely return to this hotel if we come back to Durango. If they provided transportation to the mountain ski area for a reasonable price we would give them a perfect 10.

First Time, Good Time
Very, very, nice for the $231 (King) I paid including taxes. (The hotel's remodeling is finally done.) Three blocks off the best part of Main Street. Lots of pillows. No free breakfast (they have a nice restaurant, with plenty of hungover staff members for service). Plenty of parking. Many restaurants and stores within walking distance. River next to hotel, but too many bugs to sit on balcony overlooking it. Nice residential street with median to walk on about three more blocks past Main Street. Train station (open-cars, tourist) withing walking distance.

It Wasn't All Good
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/12/07
Good news, bad news; the bad news is, I am not sure about all the rooms, but we had a king suite/town view and it came with no microwave or refridgerator. We like trying different restaurants and some places had the best food and we would have liked to bring back our leftovers for later in the evening from some places we tried, especially with two hungry kids. But, no refridgeration or microwave. Maybe it was their idea of getting people to eat at their restaurant instead of having the option of bringing in food from the outside. The only problem with that is, you better like their food. The hotel restaurant was very POOR! I expected more from this 4 star hotel that gets such great reviews and for the money, they might want to rethink the quality of food they put out. Hormel meat products for lunch and breakfast items and generic grocery store-bought potato salad was really bad. We had dinner there only one night, I ordered salmon, it was overcooked and very dry. We had breakfast there on two mornings but the quality of the food was like that you would have found at a lower class hotel offering a continental breakfast. Actually I wondered why they didn't offer that at least. I had ordered a corned beef hash and eggs one morning and my corned beef was cold when it got to the table. I wondered if they had only lightly microwaved it...plus, it wasn't quality corned beef either, just your basic out of the tin-can Hormel stuff--cold...yuck! Cleanliness, We stayed 5 nights and only one day did we get a really clean room, and that was only because I called and complained very nicely; they offered a "VIP" room cleaning for the following day. When I saw the VIP cleaning, I wondered why it had to be ordered as a VIP cleaning and not cleaned like that all the time. Other than that one day of VIP cleaning it was back to the way they kept the room before; Trash left on the floors, unreplaced drinking glasses, poor vacuming, uncleaned bathroom counters, rinse only job on the tub and maybe a quick sweep on the bathroom tiled floor. The good news; the hotel is in a good location, and if available, you might get a room with a river view. We had to extend our stay and they did accomodate us for an extra 2 nights since there were no other places available in town. The hotel staff were all pleasant. They do have some really good chocolate chip cookies, but, they offer free cookies at the front desk when you check in, but charged us for them at the restaurant which I thought was kind of odd. I might stay at this hotel again if other hotels were booked and it was sort of last resort, but for the price, I'd rather drive that extra distance and have a clean room to come back to at the end of a long day, have a choice of being able to bring in some micro-wave popcorn or dinner left-overs for the kids and a place to keep food or beverages cold. Since I didn't care for their quality of food at their restaurant we had to drive out anyway to find a place to eat our meals--so why bother on location? 2-stars might be rating this hotel too low but three stars is stretching it a bit...maybe a 2-1/2 star would be close to the rating I would give it.

Great Location!
By KathyG, 7/10/07
We visited Durango in July. We arrived on the 4th and the fireworks went off right behind the hotel! This hotel is very pretty inside with an "old" time feel. The river runs right behind it, so request a room in the back if you can. There is a great trail that runs along the river and you can see the rafters, fishermen, and kayakers go by. You are a 5 minute walk into the lovely town, near the train station, restaurants, and shops. Albertson's grocery store and Starbucks is right next to the hotel. Also, there is a rafting company right there. The service was excellent - accomodating us last minute on a cot and had no problem with giving us an extra hour for check out. Other than maybe staying at one of the historic hotels right in town, this was great all around for location - the river was wonderful to be near. Try the River Rat Cafe right on the bank for happy hour or brunch.

you could starve to death here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/25/06
We had a terrible time trying to eat in the hotel restaurant. They had two bus tours in the hotel and clearly were not prepared (how could this be a surprise?). Example: the salad bar was down to the dregs, and it's a double-sided affair but only half was in use--yet the dining room was jammed. We weren't with a tour, and after having the cattle-car experience for supper we decided the next morning to have a room service continental breakfast. We got the most pitiful sweet rolls, soggy and tough (microwaved). They weren't good to begin with, they were like the ones you get in a package at the supermarket. For them, a glass of orange juice and a glass of milk, for two of us, $21 plus tip. That's way too much. And--the breakfast was late. Supposedly if it's late you don't pay but they said it was on time because it left the kitchen about 15 minutes before we got it in our room. We liked Durango but we won't be staying at this DoubleTree again, it was way expensive ($189) a night and definitely not worth the price. The room was ordinary, not worth the price, and it was too expensive and difficult to eat in the hotel. They even had the nerve at that price to charge us to park!

One of best hotels in USA!
By BEVERLY, 8/30/05
Beautiful location, with bubbling creek running behind hotel (can hear from room)! Very clean, top notch service, great restuarant, near Durango attractions, well designed, I could go on and on. Highly recommended hotel spot, I stayed there on a business trip and would take my family back in the future without any questions (and will!). Excellent hotel.

A wonderful, relaxing stay!
By Danielle, 5/22/05
My husband and I purchased the Sweet Romance Getaway package at this Doubletree for our anniversary. When we arrived, the friendly staff welcomed us and showed us to our room. They provided us with a complimentary bottle of very good Chardonnay, and later a bottle of Champagne. The price of this package included breakfast for two each day we stayed, which was also very good. The room was beautiful, spacious, and immaculate. Ours was a river view, and it was a beautiful sight to see the Animas river flow by. The hotel is very conveniently located - just right across the highway from everything else. The town itself is very pretty. There are quaint shops everywhere, with interesting wares. There is a spectacular Italian restaurant called Ariano's that should not be missed. Unfortunately, we missed the train ride to Silverton but I have heard from several friends that it is a wonderful experience. All in all, this was a romantic, relaxing trip. I would recommend it to couples trying to get away and even families looking to see a new part of the country.
