Wonderful location and nice luxury
By ,
The US Grant did us right. We stayed with the family for three nights. They upgraded us to a suite, which was luxurious and spacious. The location is great - you can walk to the Gaslamp District and to the waterfront. It is also close to the ballpark, the zoo and other attractions. All of our interactions with the front desk and concierge were professional and competent.

Don't bother!
By ,
I expected so much more from a reportedly 5 star hotel. It is nothing of the sort. I was intrigued by the five star rating this hotel rated. While the lobby and downstairs amenities were elegant (an who uses them?) as wee the hallways the rest was downright terrible. I checked in there in lieu of a late night drive home and expected this hotel to be an oasis. It was anything but.... I entered the room and found that it had been used. The shower towel was at the entrance to the shower and was damp. There were two more wet towels, one at the foot of the bed and the other slung over the chair. In discussing this with the front desk they offered no more than an apology. They didn't even replace the used towels! I tried to turn on the nightstand light but it was broken. The radio was on and I could not see the controls to silence it (no light). It took TWO calls to "guest services" to get a replacement. There is a 7/11 two blocks away but do NOT go out after 11 pm without a body guard or a gun. Broadway is downright DANGEROUS after dark and the police, fire and ambulance sirens reminded me of the worst part of Manhattan. Having arrived after dining I had some leftover food. I placed it in the in room refrigerator. The refrigerator was full of sodas, seltzers, wines and champagnes. I removed them to make room for the leftovers and, when I closed the door, I saw a placard that said the refrigerator automatically senses then a can or bottle is moved and would automatically bill me for any drink "taken". Keep in mind that they do not post the prices of their drinks and if you move a bottle/can in the front to get to one in the back you will be billed for both. I went to the front desk and told the night supervisor that I had moved the bottles and not consumed any of them and DID NOT want to see any charges for the beverages I'd moved. The supervisor told me he'd "take care of everything". He apparently did.. The next day my credit card was billed an extra $255.64 for the beverages. I called the hotel and was told that "this happens all the time". Apparently they hope their guests won't discover this common "error". It has been 3 days and they still. apparently haven't gotten around to it. $32 per night parking.. the forget to mention that as well. Bypass this hotel. They do not rate two stars let alone 5. You're better off in a Motel 6.

This is what a luxury hotel is supposed to be!
By ,
My wife and I spent three days in the San Diego area, the first two days at Loews in Coronado (a disappointment, see my review there), and the last night at the US Grant. This is what a luxury hotel should be! From the moment we drove in until the time we checked out, the staff at the US Grant treated us like royalty. We had no sooner stopped out car when two bellhops came and took out luggage, and a third escorted us to the beautiful lobby. While checking in, the manager came out from his office, introduced himself, and told us to call him if there was anything we needed. We were then escorted to our upgraded room (it was our anniversary), our luggage was brought up (and laid out where we could use it), everything was wonderful! I've done my share of travel (about 10 business trips a year), and this was the nicest hotel I've ever stayed at! As far as I'm concerned, there is no finer hotel in the downtown San Diego area.

Excellent
By ,
Fantastic location if you want to experience the city. Right next door to the Gaslamp District & Horton Plaza, an easy walk to the harbour, and within walking distance of Balboa Park & the zoo. The room provided was very well appointed, comfortable, and quiet. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Meals provided through room service were a little pricey but beautifully presented and delicious. If I had to make one recommendation for improvement it would be to improve the water pressure of the shower on the 6th floor. Not a deal breaker! I would definitely recommend and return to the US Grant.

The best renovation ever!!!
By ,
The history of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is wonderfully shown throughout the hotel, the sculptures to the pictures are amazing! I loved the grand opening and the food was excellent. I was very impressed with the staff and employees from getting out of my car in valet to directing me to the presidential ballroom, the lighting and sound is the best I've ever heard. I definately will go back. Starwood very much impressed me with the information on the web and reserving my future stars.

Not likely to stay there twice....
By ,
We went to San Diego for a romantic New Year's get-a-way and were disappointed with the hotel. Although it's lovely in an old-stately-hotel-sort-of-way, the photograph they use on the Web is definitely false advertising. To get this perspective of the hotel, you have to go across the street to a mall and use your hands to block out the street. The hotel sits flush up against the sidewalk, near-not-in the Gaslamp Quarter. The staff is disinterested, the food in the restaurants is of average quality and above-average price. After breakfast in the hotel a couple of days, we wanted to try somewhere different. We asked three different hotel employees for suggestions and were told each time there was nothing available within walking distance. Not true! "Croce's", owned and operated by the late Jim Croce's widow, is a few short blocks away and serves a marvelous breakfast! (Along with several other places along the way.) Valet parking was slow, housekeeping standards varied each day and the room was much too small for the amount & size of furniture in it. We loved San Diego, and enjoyed the convenient location of the Grant. But stay there again? Only if it was a freebie...

It was nice, but nothing special
By ,
My stay at the U.S. Grant was nice, but it was nothing special. As it was a historic hotel, I expected it somewhat, so I was not surprised. Our room was nice, and I had no complaints about the service. The elevators took quite a while, but again, expected from a historic hotel.

Not great for the rates
By ,
Extras: internet $13/day; gym $10/day; parking $24/day...for $270/night some of the services above should be free. Carpets were dirty. Toilet was rusty. Food was good. Central location. For the most part the staff was friendly.

wheww!!
By ,
the only reason why the value was good was because I only paid $40/night, compared to almost $100 if u book on their website...this used to be a spectacular hotel but not any more. The room was OK, though from reading other sites, this place could be worse. If you get this cheap, just be careful and hope your stay doesn't go bad. Mine was all right, though I wouldn't take the chance again until they renovate.
