pros and cons
By Joan, 6/14/10
Can't beat the location but you pay a steep price for it. We liked the comfortable beds, the clean rooms and the dramatic lobby. However, they don't offer complimentary coffee (a hotel first for me) and it's either the Starbucks next door or a hike in the cold early morning fog to a coffee shop three blocks away. Why are there no shelves in the bathrooms to put your stuff on? We had a huge walk-in closet for our bags and clothes, but again, only one (high) shelf. Lousy TV- only CNN and local stations. The linen on our beds was not changed the entire week we were there. The one dinner we had in the hotel dining room was good but room was very dark and noisy. One afternoon we returned from sightseeing to learn that our room had been booked by a wedding party (while also booked by us). Gaining access to the room required several trips to the desk and no apology was forthcoming for our trouble. I wouldn't stay here again.

recent stay Jan 28 and 29th 2009
By MIKE, 2/2/09
Location is the best thing about the Sir Francis Drake. The cable car stops right in front. The staff were warm and inviting and eager to please. Scala's restaurant is great for dinner but, breakfast is another story (at least the continental breakfast). Rooms are very dated and bathrooms tiny and in need of updating. Lobby makes you feel like you stepped back into time (in a good way) and is very relaxing. Internet access was a major pain to get. IT company had no idea what they were doing in trying to help. After an hour of our own efforts we finally had the internet available and I don't believe that it was the hotel's WIFI. Our room rate was $179 a night which was a bargain in this area. Need to try Sears Fine Food for breakfast across the street very good.

Good Service, Small Bathroom
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/19/07
I stayed at this hotel on my first visit to San Francisco in September of '07. The service was great. Doormen and guest services were very helpful and always friendly. If you enjoy being in a very busy part of San Francisco with lots of good shopping then this is a decent place. It's very close to China Town, Little Italy, and the waterfront, but it is not close to Golden Gate Park, the Pacific, Castro district, or Twin Peaks. My main complaint about this hotel is the very tiny bathroom. If you are not supermodel thin and double-jointed, using the toilet comfortably is a challenge. It's in a little cubby-hole type area. Also, no space to lay out toiletries, requiring you to keep them in your bag. The next time I go to SFO I'll opt for a bed and breakfast in a neighborhood.

Cool Hotel
By Darren, 3/5/07
You have to wonder who is writing these. From NY on vacation. Great location, great door man, Great Hotel and decor.. Highly suggest staying there. Great beds, small rooms but expect that in the city. Large people can NOT fit on the toiletes.. Wireless internet - doesn't work on 16 floor, no wall jack and they charge for lobby computer use. Parking - 40/day vallet parking, 30/ day one block up.

In the Middle of Everything
By George, 2/14/07
This is a great hotel if you want to be close to everything. Shopping, restaurants, theater, churches, tourist attractions, etc. Staff great, rooms are clean and bright and old world. San Francisco is visual over-load and you can see it all from The Drake... Treat yourself and stay there.

old isn't always nostalgic or classy
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/10/06
#1 we never heard from them regarding our comments as promised at departure #2 the $45 per day parking fee was NEVER disclosed, even after i asked if there would be a place to park!#3 key never worked for my husband. He went down 4 times, but that never solved the problem & they never offered another solution, or help.#4 room was never cleaned. We left for 7 hrs and had the same dirty towels and unmade bed as when we left. front desk said"oh sorry. can you leave for a couple more hours so we can get it cleaned for you?"we were on our way to a dinner engagement! At check-out, our complaints were taken with a grain of salt, and a mummbled"sorry to hear that" was uttered by the mgr. on duty."you will be hearing from us VERY soon to go over your stay" 2 weeks later..NOTHING!!!!! we must say though that that guys in the red outfits, that greet you as you 1st arrive, are the most helpful, knowledgable and wonderful group of fellows we met anywhere in the hotel. they made the stay tolerable.Especially Tom (you rock Tom!)

Great Stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/13/06
I spent five nights at the Drake and had a wonderful experience. I went with my elderly parents, who were given a special needs room that made their stay much easier. The hotel staff were also very friendly and accomodating. My wife and I reserved a "petite queen" room because of the lower rate and I had some concerns about how small it might be. It was small but had recently been refurbished and was quite nice. The bathroom was excellent and the shower awesome. If I had spent lots of time in the room, it would have been difficult because of its size but the hotel is located in the heart of Union Square and we only came back to our room to collapse in the very comfortable bed. This was my second stay at the Drake and for the money, it is hard to beat! p.s. The coffee shop is excellent.

Great Hotel Too pricy
By M, 4/12/06
This I fell was a great hotel to stay in considering the busy streets of San Francisco. It is a prime location within the city. Very classy, yet seemed to be a little bit pricy for what was offered.

My Palace away from Home
By David Gillis, 2/24/06
Located centrally to everything that I wanted to see in San Francisco, plus they have the most incredible nightclub ONTOP of the hotel. Its called Harry Denton's Starlight Room, and the place was phenemonal. The staff was totally professional, very safe environment, INCREDIBLE VIEW!, plus the entertainers there were the best I've ever heard. Their resident DJ Dave Gillis lit the room up! He played everything- R&B, Disco Funk, Pop, Dance, and Hip Hop, and was incredibly smooth and funky. I had never been to a place where I was around people from all over the world, partying all in one place, having an incredible time.
