Got a LAX?
By Paesano Italiano, 01/03/08
A stay at this hotel a while ago was disappointing. Why? I expected a hotel of such a distinguished stature to be more upscale, service oriented and maintain a bit of charm. I stayed at the Biltmore last time and thought that I'd give the Roosevelt a try this time. But, it did not match, whatsoever. The loby and check in area was not impressive. I actually walked in and looked around, thinking to myself, "is this it...? Is this where I check in...? I actually walked up, around the hall and then came back down and realized that I had passed it up. I have never entered a hotel before, whereas I was confused... and I even walked into the front entrance! The old lounge and dining area are seperate from the check-in reception. They had some old charm left in the architecture, but not much buzz was found there. When I wandered over to this part of the hotel, it just made me feel, well... blah. I also didn't understand why this nicer part of the hotel was seemingly neglected and not meeting its potential. The rooms were very average. I could not believe my eyes when I walked inside. I felt sort of cheated for the value that I expected. It looked like a budget hotel that was trying, but didn't make the mark. The food in the restaurant was okay. It just met the standard and didn't impress me either. It was not bad, but it was not good. Then there was the pool. I thought I'd put on my speedo and take a dip? Oh, no! I felt like I was walking into some second rate MTV pool party... I took a peek and turned right out of there. I didn't even stay for a drink at the poolside bar and lounge. I didn't appreciate the car service either. It was expensive, inconvenient and it had an air of snob appeal that was so out of place. I didn't appreciate competing for tips every time I requested my vehicle, especially when I felt that the space INSIDE the hotel was not meeting expectations. Finally, the location is not anything to brag about. Either you appreciate the Hollywood Boulevard milieu or you don't. Sure, its part of quintessential L.A. culture. But how much do you need of rampant commercialism, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the worn-out Walk of Fame and elements of urban blite everywhere. This hotel is a landmark to its area. It could be nice here, without turning it all into a theme-park/shopping mall environment. What I found is a part of LA that I could leave behind. It is, of course, quite different than the Biltmore, but also that of the Mariott (at World Trade Center) or the Checkers, etc.

Heads up
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/24/07
I was told this was a hip, very clean, great place to stay. The location was okay but like being in the middle of Times Square at rush hour, if you like that kind of sensory overload. The valet service told my daughter who dropped us off to check in that she could leave her car for no charge while she helped us wheel our luggage in. She was charged $5 for being gone 11 minutes. They said if she was gone 9 or less minutes it would be less. What the? The room is a minimalist design. Is that what they call sparse in 2007? Dark chocolate brown walls made it so dark, even with all the lamps on that I wanted to go buy a flashlight. The bathroom has an odd half glass shield for the shower. Well, the floor and walls then becomes quite slick from the shower droplets that won't know to not go beyond the halfway point of the tub. It was ridiculous. I have never seen such an odd set up. There are bizarre golden yellow lights in the bathroom. If you ever wanted to see what you might look like colored as an Oompah Loompah here's your chance. Otherwise, this is another oddity. Be aware that even though there is a complimentary coffee machine in the room, the coffee costs you $4 a packet. Even tea bags costs $4 each. Do not touch a thing in that mini-bar or you'll equal the cost of your trip. The walls are so paper thin, and the whole hotel so noisy, I could hear the TV and conversations from rooms on either side and above me! Way too noisy for the average customer to attempt sleeping. All night long noise even at 4am. Buyer beware.

I am not going back!
By H J, 10/08/07
Well, room size was OK, bed and pillows were very comfortable, bathroom is a bit on the smaller side. Make sure you do not stay close to service elevator, otherwise you won't be able to sleep because of constant noise. Staff lacks basic manners, valet management was terrible, they could not locate our car key for 20min, and told us they could not find it, I'm not sure what we were expected to do! As if it was not enough we were late for a dinner arrangement, valet manager tried to accuse us for being unreasonable, telling us we just checked in 10 minutes ago and we cannot expect our key to be ready that soon, funny thing this technology! On our valet ticket, time we left our car was recorded, and it was 45min prior to our conversation with polite(!!!) valet staff! Do not bother to put a "do not disturb" sign on your door, room service staff is very loud in the morning, you'll wake up no matter what... And last but not least, we attempted to try pool side bar late at night, one of us did not have an ID on, so we had to go back to our car, by the time we were back, security informed us we cannot be let in to pool area. Well, reason was they were closing, interesting point was, theer was a group ahead of us who were going in and trying to bargain to be permitted to take 2 more friends with them. I have no idea why I cannot go to an area in my hotel since they are not actually closed... Security's attitude and tone was not pleasant either. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky since we witnessed security being ruder to some our guests! Bottom line, small guys working for valet were nice, front desk services were efficient, location is awesome, but is it worth if you're treated like this? NO! There are many alternatives and I'll surely consider those next time! You can get better service for your money.

Location, Location, Location
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/18/07
Stayed 6 nights at The Roosevelt, my first time in Hollywood. The room was clean but nothing special in design and fixtures. The attempt at being a boutique hotel doesn't really work. For the price you would expect at least a decent chair to sit on. At least the bed was very good. The Hotel could be noisy. When will they realise that it is not a good idea to put CD players into hotel rooms! The hotel was incredibly dark. No one sat very long in the common areas which are large. The staff were friendly enough but at times a bit false in their desire to create an aura of wacky fun. The best thing by far is the hotels' location which is brilliant.Just step out of the main entrance and your looking at the Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood and Highland Centre. Also the view from my window straight downtown LA was excellent. I might come here again but I'm going to try the Renaissance first.

Can't wait to come back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/27/07
It was a wonderful place to stay. I enjoyed every thing about the Hotel. The location was wonderful, and everyone was very helpful with our questions. I love the Marilyn Monroe mirror. I loved standing on the balcony, and looking down and imagining all the stars of the 30's & 40's being there for diners and awards shows.

nice hotel b/c of location, near allt he trendy restuarants, bars, clubs, shopping. nice bar, club, and poolside area =) only thing i thought was lacking was the service. for the price we paid for the room, i thought the service should have been better. especially the valet service.

Nice & not so nice...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/18/07
The hotel has been newly renovated and the rooms are nice, with a modern stylish look. There are nice views of Dowtown LA and the Walk of Stars from most of the rooms. As someone pointed out earlier, the major problem of the hotel is the staff. They are not very competent, and some are not friendly at all. I was too was very disappointed in my stay. It started with check in. There was no Bellhop available to assist with luggage. I had called the day before to arrange for early check in and they told me it was all arranged. Upon check in, I was told that my room was given to someone else and they would offer me another room instead. Then there was the treatment at the Tropicana Bar. The bar staff never bothered to come to check on us or offer us table service and my guests and I were there for over 3 hours. Finally I had to complain to the Management about the poor service. Just be warned that if you stay there, although it is a hip hotel because of it's location and history; however based upon the price you are paying, you really should consider staying somewhere else for better service.
