Beware the parking lot
Service was pretty good, breakfasts OK, rooms pretty clean. Had wireless Internet access that was fast.
The double-queen suite was pretty big and comfortable. Typical mid-market hotel chain.
HOWEVER - their parking lot is an EXTREMELY BAD PLACE to park your car. Our third night there--the day before we were supposed to leave, of course--we had our window smashed and DVD player, screen, and digital camera stolen. We got back from Disneyland very late the night before and neglected to scoop up the digital camera as we trudged up to our room after an exhausting day at the Magic Kingdom.
Now, admittedly, we parked in the back of the parking lot on a Thursday night when the hotel's census is relatively low. In fact, there were no cars around us. And, hey, it's Buena Park and really not a spectacular neighborhood. I'll give you that. There IS a sign that warns you you park at your own risk.
HOWEVER - the hotel's parking lot, we found out, has had several break-ins over the last number of weeks. In fact, the night AFTER we had our car broken in to there were TWO more theft incidents. That makes for three incidents in just two days. If that's not a crime epidemic, I don't know what is.
Does the hotel warn you you may not want to park there? No they don't. Why would they? It's bad for their "image." Instead of providing service to their customers--like, say, a single late-hours security guard that could work a single shift patrolling the property or at least a decent security camera system, they brush it off and try to pretend like bad people don't prey on happy tourists like us. We park at "our own risk," consequences to the image of the property and our vacation memories be damned. This cavalier attitude is like watching someone urinate on your lawn every day then wonder why the grass is dying.
The hotel's management proclaimed they "haven't had any incidents in a long time" to us when they found out we had been busted into. This was simply a lie unless they interpret "a long time" as any time increment shorter than 1 or 2 weeks. The Buena Park Police Department had a much different story. Break-ins are frequent in that lot.
If criminals are having a nightly free-for-all on whatever vehicle suits their fancy on your piece of property you don't stick your head in the sand and hope the problem will go away. You don't lie to your customers about it. You FIX THE PROBLEM. Hilton needs to FIX THE PROBLEM. They need good on-site security.
The police can't cover this lot all the time--though it is a part of their beat apparently. We found out that Buena Park, a city of 77,000, only has 5 officers patrolling on any given shift of a very large incorporated surface area. And the lot IS private property.
If you're going to go to this hotel--and, to their credit, it's not a "bad" hotel--be very careful about leaving any kind of personal belongings in your vehicle. If you have valuable audio/visual equipment, don't bring that vehicle with you or at least don't park in the back of the lot EVER. Hopefully you have a good car alarm with a remote pager on it.
This incident did not ruin our trip, but we wasted a whole day of our vacation dealing with the police, insurance company, and getting the glass replaced. All the items can be replaced, but we had a lot of great pictures from our digital camera stolen. Needless to say those can't be replaced.
