Grant Plaza Hotel, San Francisco

Had problems when got there booked a room for 3 people 2 beds and a cot and were given at first a tiny room with 1 bed. Problem was fixed but rooms were so small we could barely walk around and had to put suitcases on the beds. Guess you get what you pay for. Maybe ok for 1 or 2 people to stay in. Only good thing is its right in the entrance to china town lots of shopping around and great sushi place across the street.

If you're a finicky traveler, go pay a couple hundred a night at the Hilton. For under a $100, this makes a nice crash pad and home base. You're in San Fran, are you going to be spending time in the hotel other than sleeping? No the hotel is not 5 star clean, but neither are the 5 star hotels! For those of you who frequently travel in the 3rd world, this would pass for a 5 star there. Very comfy clean bed, and that's what counts. One block inside Chinatown, couple blocks from Little Italy, walking distance to Union Square, a good walk (15 blocks ???) to fishermans wharf. You can not beat this location. Staff is very helpful and courteous. 7-11 is just down to Banana Republic and hang a left. LOCATION !!!!! Yes, I would stay again, no question about it.

This hotel is known for its great location, however, it seems their rooms are a bit in the dark. Their best rooms are on the higher floors where there is light from the outside. They have NO air conditioning at all. They offer the most basic hotel amenities there is to offer. On top of that, their beds are not comfortable at all so why would I stay there again. I have also heard of a few cases of bed bugs in the rooms while eavesdropping in the lobby. I would not take my chances to live there, I think I would pay a little more for more comfort.

My family and I recently did a 7 week tour of the States and we stayed in many fancy 5 star hotels and someone recommended the Grant and first impressions we were a little worried but it proved to be clean,central,gave you free internet access,excellent advise on tourist attractions and enough coffee and pastries to last you the day .I would come back as the staff tried their best and were a lot more helpful than the staff in the other major cities.It was a pleasant enough experience

Travelers Beware! The website picture shown of the room at the Grant Plaza Hotel didn't come close to what I was actually given. My plain, modestly furnished room was small, cramp, stuffy, and very unattractive. The window view was the backside of another hotel with a fire escape and large pipes along my window. There is NO AC. I requested a quiet room, and with every step taken the floor/carpet creaked, which I'm sure the person below me could hear my every movement. I was able to clearly hear the guest's footsteps ABOVE ME so well there were times it kept me up! The walls were so thin you could hear voices in the hallway* and in the bathroom. The bathroom was cramp and tight especially around the toilet. The tile grout on the floor was dirty and needed scrubbing. At night when the lights were out I found the door frame was lit-up! *The door wasn't fitted properly and I saw gabs along the door frame (no wonder I heard the voices from the hallway so clearly). There is no continental breakfast and parking is about two blocks away. The beds were comfortable and clean. The lobby looks attractive; better than my room! The carpets in the hallways were stained and the floor creaked, too. Location is the high point here. The hotel is one block from the Chinatown Gateway. It is close to downtown Union Square & Market St. The same website picture of the room was also posted outside the hotel. (More travelers will be deceived!) With some of the positive reviews I've read there are obviously some better rooms than what I was given! What's the deal here?! I paid $82 dollars plus another $20 for parking! This wasn't the Best Buy in hotel selection. The negative reviews are more accurate of what I experienced at the Grant Plaza Hotel. Travelers Beware, there are two hotels with similar names: Grant Plaza and Grant Hotel on Bush St. Both are located downtown yet the Grant Hotel has better reviews and they offer contiental breakfast. Yahoo Travels has the same picture posted on their website for two different hotels. I wasn't careful enough to see the differnce. Don't make the same mistake as I did and be deceived.

The room was tiny, we had a nice view...of the side of another building. The place seemed very old and was not what I expected when I saw the pictures online, which were obviously taken way back in the day, yeah, probably OPENING day. Not to mention the picture they have of their lobby..well, I have no idea where they got that picture from because that isn't their lobby at all. It got cold at night and they said they won't turn on the heaters unless it was like below 20 degrees outside(you don't get to control your own room's climate), and the heater in the room is one of the old style space heaters that is about a foot away from the bed. If they did turn on the heaters I'd probably be afraid of the blanket catching on fire - or my face! The shower was just that...a shower - no tub. Who doesn't like to take baths when their on vacation? We didn't get our wake-up calls every morning that we asked for either. The only good thing about this hotel was it's location in relation to the activites I was personally interested in. I would not stay here again.

The room is very samll and busy. We could not sleep well because of big noize occurred by water drainage of bathroom and water leak noize at a ceiling. The actual room conditions are very different from the information on the web site.

This is a decent hotel and a great deal for the price. The staff are all wonderful and friendly. Some of the prior reviews say the hotel doesn't have heat. This is not true as they all have radiators. In fact, we had to turn ours off as it was too warm (in March too). The windows ARE secure as they have bolts that only let them go so high. We will definately stay again. I loved being central, walking everywhere, and being able to look out on Grant street. When you book, ask to stay on the 6th floor (top floor) facing streetside, especially Grant St (vs. the inner rooms that face each other). I am a light sleeper and do not like having people over my head making noise. Also, the view facing Grant Street is fantastic. The $20 parking garage is close and secure.

First of all the hotel looked really really old and in bad shape. There were cracks in the walls, spots etc The rooms were very small and everything looked too crowded. Not to mention that I couldn`t sleep all night for fear that somebody would just walk in on me. It just didn`t feel safe. Except for the location...there`s nothing I liked about this hotel

I have been staying at this fine hotel for 10 years now. The beds are soft and the room is super clean. Within walking distance of everything from John's grill to city lights bookstore this hotel is tops. The service is second to none. Whether it's directions, a hypoallergenic pillow, or use of the computer or telephone this hotel will get it for you. When I stayed here, the fine girl at the front desk made my dinner reservations and even gave me some discount coupons for my dinner. Don't miss out on San Francisco's best kept secret. Hotel's don't get any better than this. Save your money and save your time. I'm telling you this hotel is the best. WONDERFUL!
