Description

Set in downtown Anchorage, the Hotel Captain Cook provides a comfortable launching pad for exploring Alaska's natural wonders, but also makes it tempting to stay put and simply enjoy the panoramic views while indulging in the excellent dining, shopping and Athletic Club. Captain James Cook helped define Alaska in the 18th century by mapping its jagged coastline for the first time. Since 1965, the Hotel Captain Cook has defined luxury in Alaska by offering a level of elegance and comfort unparalleled across the state. As Alaska's sole member of the Preferred Hotels Group, the Hotel Captain Cook pays honor to Alaska's storied history by displaying murals and artifacts depicting the voyages of Captain Cook from centuries past, and also embraces the cutting edge of contemporary service, from the heralded Crow's Nest to its legendary wine cellar. Enjoying a meal at the Hotel Captain Cook can be whatever experience you desire: There are three on-site restaurants and a gourmet coffee and wine bar as well as 24-hour, in-room service. Watch the sunset as you enjoy an elegant meal from the top of Tower 3. Kick back with a pizza and a local microbrew in a pub setting. Or, make the most of your room's own view accompanied by a late-night omelet. The Captain Cook's 546 rooms, including 96 suites, inhabit three towers, with each room offering a stunning, large-window view, whether it's of the neighboring Cook Inlet or the Chugach Mountains. All rooms and suites feature down duvets and pillows, decadently plush bathrobes, complimentary wifi and Internet, evening turndown service and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. Whether you want to go whale watching, fly-fishing or flight seeing over a glacier, the concierges at Hotel Captain Cook can help you book excursions, while museums, shopping and natural encounters are just steps away from the hotel's doors.

NOT a luxury hotel unless you live in a Tent.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/21/11
This is a nice 3 star property; however, don't be fooled by its "Luxury" title. There is not much luxury unless you have never stayed at a true luxury hotel and have nothing to compare it with. The art stores inside are nice and the staff is friendly and tries. Don't stay here for the food, it is OK but other restaurants in town are better and the service was lackluster. It is an old property and it is probably too obvious. We were in a Jr. Suite and it was very small with just enough room for a king bed in one room and a small sitting area. The pillows smelled like they needed to be washed and not just recovered. The spa looked and smelled more like the local gym (which it apparently is) than a luxury hotel spa, however the workout equipment was modern. The pool had too much chlorine and the hot tub water was yellow. It did have very slow free wireless internet if that helps, but the gift store closes at 10pm and there are no vending machines, only very expensive room service. There are probably better places for business travelers to stay. They obviously benefit from having very little competition, but I’ll probably try the Hilton the next time I am in Anchorage.

I can't wait to return.
By MissGuided08, 12/6/09
Upon check-in I had to be moved to another room because the room phone didn't work. the next room there was a wrench on the table apprantly it was left behind from failed window latch repair. The room wasn't very spacious didn't and have a flat screen t.v. or a fan in the bathroom. The decor was wonderful very warm and soothing. The bed and sheets outstanding. I haven't slept that good ever while traveling. The ceiling fan was a nice touch made my stay feel more like home. The room service food was not good. It was bland tasting. Modly strawberries, rotten grapes and so on were served at the breakfast buffet. The conference dinner was not good. The meat was chewy. Scalloped potatos with blue cheese not good either. I only got coffee at the "Whale's Tail" resturant. I never ate at any of the many resturants in the Hotel. I don't know how they choose to give guests the Wall Street Journal and or The Anchorage Daily News... one day I got both other days none....delivered to my room. The shops in the Hotel were wonderful. The staff were always polite and helpful. The hotel is located close enough to the 5th Avenue Mall that it's withing walking distance so that was good. I can't wait to return and try some of the resturants in teh hotel.

This is an absolutely wonderful hotel with the most fantistic view from the top floor of their restaurant. Spa, Olympic size pool, fabulous gift shops.

Great Experience
By J H, 3/4/08
Visited for the first time on Iditarod weekend. Despite it being probably the busiest winter weekend, service was top-notch all around - doorman, front desk, room service, retaurants, shops, even maid service (never saw a cart in the hallways - they must pull into rooms - nice touch!). I had a 16th floor junior suite in Tower 3 and was very pleased - living room area had windows on two sides, allowing view east down 4th towards the race start, and the bay to the North and West. Was great to watch the dog teams starting to arrive and determine when to go down and mingle pre-race. Bedroom was completely separate and of good size with ample closet space and a refrigerator. Bathroom was a bit small (keep in mind this hotel was built in 60's & 70's), but made great use of the space by having full mirrors above the counters on two walls. Can lamp lighting wasn't great for putting on makeup, but with all the windows there was plenty of natural light elsewhere. Deeper than average tub (in separate room with toilet) and waterfall showerhead. Nice heavy terry robes provided. Living room was also good sized, with sofa, armchair, round table with 2 chairs, desk, and built-in dry bar. Room decor looked fairlyy new, in earth tones in keeping with the hotels decor. Some reviewers call in dark, but I like the hotel's character with the dark teak and large public areas and shop promenades. It's kind of a throwback to a different hotel era. I stay in enough generic Hyatt/Marriott/Radisson type hotels to appreciate a different personality. And for all the whiners who complain about no A/C - it's Alaska!! I live in Seattle and most of us don't have A/C! There are ceiling fans in bedroom and living room, and a portable Vortex-type fan in the closet, and some of the windows crank open. If you're visiting during a RARE heat weave, just ask for an east-facing room. Nice choice of restaurants (4); high-end top floor, Italian, standard coffee-shop, and coffee bar lounge. Also the location is convenient to walk to downtown for other choices. Free WIFI worked great - even on the 16th floor in a far corner. Access is automatic - no pesky passwords and setting adjustments either via Windows wireless or T-Mobile's interface. The only drawback is the parking - non onsite, and not free. My off-season package included self-parking in a private garage a half-block away (usually $12/day), and valet parking is $20, and they park in the same garage I think. All in all, a pleasant experience and I plan to return

Over rated hotel for the price.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/5/08
Overpriced rooms with lack luster atmospher. No A/C. The pool was way to small and over chlorinated. The food was okay but not even close two a two star level. For a museum or a shrine to the infamous Captain Cook,This place would be a thumbs up! But for a hotel, I will go with the local bed and breakfsst agencies for more attentive care, better quality food.

Best in Anchorage
By Rich, 1/1/08
This hotel provides all of the service and quality you should expect from a hotel at this level. I travel regularly to Anchorage and this hotel is head and shoulders above the rest.

Beautiful hotel, beware no AC
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/22/07
The hotel captain cook is a beautiful hotel with great food and a great location. When arriving there on a July day during a warm streak we quickly found out that there is no AC. Most people would shrug that off and say then just open the windows.... there were two problems to that. 1 remember that it is daylight most of the time and only "dusk" from 2am -4am- so you need an eye mask. 2 you are near an inlet, where with the window open you constantly hear seagulls- so you need ear plugs.... I eventually couldn't stand wearing either, closed the windows and slept as best as I could. By the 3rd day I was sleep deprived.
