The name Irondale was taken from a furnace located just west of what is now the city limits. The furnace was first known as the Cahaba Iron Works, but the local folks always called the place Irondale. The furnace was used to make iron, which was fashioned into munitions for the Confederate Army. The furnace was eventually destroyed during the latter part of the War Between the States. Irondale sits in a valley with Red Mountain to its north and Cahaba Mountain or Shades Mountain to its south and southeast.Nearby area attractions include the Southern Museum of Flight, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens, the Meyer Planetarium, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Birmingham Zoo, the Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, and the Visionland Amusement Parks. The book, and later a film, Fried Green Tomatoes, written by Irondale native Fannie Flagg, is loosely based around the town and the landmark Whistle Stop Cafe. Irondale is also the location of Catholic radio and television broadcaster EWTN, the Eternal World Television Network.

BUGS...BEWARE......WHORE MOTEL
By Jermaine, 11/03/09
On Oct 24, I checked into the America's Best Value inn Located at 1813 Crestwood Boulevard Irondale, AL 35210 US. My wife and I entered room and got settled. After making a run for dinner, we arrived at the hotel around 830pm to settle in and go to sleep. We left the TV on while we slept. Approximately 1:30 am in the morning, my wife was awakened by noise from the TV. She then looked over towards me and saw two dark pea-sized dots on the pillow. Thinking it was only stains she reached towards the dots and was startled to find out that they frantically scattered at her attempt to touch them. I was awakened by her call out and immediately turned the lights on. We jumped out of the bed and noticed more and more of the critters. Upon pulling the sheets back we noticed approximately 15-20 of the bugs ranging from big to small. It then occurred to me that the room was completely infested. My personal knowledge of bed bugs reminded me that they suck blood and cause a number of things including itching and rash, but nothing fatal. We immediately jumped in the shower around 2 am, got dressed, and went to the front office. I called for the desk clerk and told her about the situation. She didn't seem too surprised about my story; she appeared to have heard about the problem before. She had a look of disappointment. I came to the conclusion that she may have heard about the problem before and maybe attempted to rid the site of the bugs and thought they were removed. She said that she would refund my money; i then I told her that I had a reservation for next weekend as well(0ct 30/31 and wanted to cancel both of those n igh ts( Fri 30th, Sat 31) and left. My wife and I drove home; washed all of our things immediately and sprayed our bags and luggage to make sure we didn't bring the bugs home with us. Approximately, a day or two later, I brok e out into hives, I have been in discomfort for 5 days now. (See pictures).I thought everything had been taken care of until Sunday and I noticed that my credit card was charged. This has been a very unpleasant experience, all I'm looking for is a resolution to this situation. I was refunded the money for sat Oct 24, but was charged 158.00 dollarts for the reservation that I told the clerk to cancel. Please help me resolve this situtation. Thanks.

Don't ever stay here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/06/08
This place was absolutely filthy. We slept in our clothes after checking for bedbugs. Didn't find any evidence of them, but the place was covered in black mold. We wouldn't sit on the toilet seat, didn't take a shower, turned the moldy light switches on and off with tissues. Nasty stains on the bedspread, carpet, walls everywhere. We had driven from Tulsa in a blinding rain storm and really needed a good nights sleep. I tried to find a number for the corporate office, but no luck. Never stay at An America's Best Value Inn, it will be your worst nightmare. Jan

Basic Clean Stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/25/07
If you are looking for a clean, inexpensive hotel, this is the place for you. My husband and I stayed here before and early flight and it fit the bill perfectly. Clean. Convienient to the airport and cheap. No frills. Just a little shut eye before a trip.

Filthy!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/30/06
This is now the Eastwood Motel. Super 8 sold it in 2003. This place is disgusting! The room that we were assigned had Grime and Nasty Stains on the rugs, curtains, windows and doors. The hard working noisy air conditioner struggled to cool the room, probably due to the fact that it was encrusted with mold. The icing on the cake: You are subjected to phone calls in the middle of the night by one of their permanent residents prostituting themselves. (I inquired with another motel guest, who also experienced this ordeal). Pool?? yep there is an empty hole in the ground. This place is not for the faint at heart. As with the other reviewer, if all else fails and this is your only choice; our recommendation is to sleep in your car!

NEVER STAY AT THIS HOTEL
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/20/04
I had traveled 14 hours before staying at this motel. I paid $50 and ended up staying in my car, because the room was unbelievably nasty. I have pictures to prove it. Email me if you would like to see these before you stay there. You have been warned! artjenny20@yahoo.com
