Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Southfield, Southfield

Booked the hotel with apparently high expectations. Having worked at a Hawthorn Suites in the past, I believed the website and trusted the Hawthorn name to provide service and cleanliness only to be greatly disappointed. Upon check in, we were told that our "Penthouse Suite" was not clean yet and we would have to wait twenty minutes. Twenty minutes turned into three hours, and while check in is supposed to be at 300pm, we didn't get into our room until a little after 6pm. Once we checked in, the long wait for a clean wait seemed wasted - the tiles in front of fireplace were filthy, kitchen floor sticky and spilled pop still on counter tops. We walked around the suite to find closet doors torn of their hinges, the front door had been kicked in at some point since it didn't close properly and needed a chair propped against it, and vanity lights in the "master bath" needed to be screwed in to be turned on (no light switch). I guess I can say I at least had a good laugh over that one. I would like to at least say its a good value for what we spent - granted, this is a large room for the money - but with such disrepair and awful service, I can't in good conscience even credit them with that. Don't trust the Hawthorn name - very misleading. And DON'T stay at this hotel!

I couldn’t find Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham in Southfield Michigan on their website list so I also wrote to what is listed as their corporate offices. We traveled with another couple to visit the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. We had separate rooms. I learned their experience was no better than ours. I cannot believe the Wyndham name is even attached to this hotel. Our stay was July 11th and was quite unpleasant. Here is a list of what was wrong: 1. No soap (for tub or sink) 2. 1 hand towel only (no bath towels) 3. No wash cloths 4. No dish towels 5. No dish soap 6. No dish cloths 7. Filthy lamp (the base was grimy) 8. Sofa was torn and stuffing was exposed 9. Room stunk from cigarettes (even when they sent someone to this so-called “non-smoking” room to spray, it still smelled) 10. Bathroom door was broken and wouldn’t close. 11. The place was generally filthy and smelly 12. The breakfast was dry and stale and lacking enough food (not being refilled, apparently, very promptly). We phoned the front desk twice – once for the cigarette smell and once for the supplies - and it took hours to get soap and towels and they said they only provide soap for the dishwasher. Now that I have gone online to see the critiques, the reports range from “horrid” to “disgusting.” Just “Google” or “Bing” Hawthorne Suites by Wyndham, Southfield, MI, to see what I mean. Too bad we didn’t do this before our trip.

Desk Staff was GREAT! Breakfast was fine. However; 1 st room smelled horribly like cigarettes; 2nd room had dirty glass on the living room table and what appeared to be an unkempt bed. Returned to frint desk to ask someone to remake the room and left the hotel premesis for an hour. Upon return, room was identical. Switched to 3rd room. Fresher smelling and clean appearance. Still dated. No towels, non-working telephone, and COCKROACHES. Displeased isn't even the word. No offer was made toward any kind of a refund or rebate or discounted future visits...not that I would've taken them up on that. But the offer would've been kind. Can NOT believe this hotel is ultimately oversoon by Wyndham properties. DISGUSTING!

Ok you have been warned! Don't stay here. room was dirty filthy kitch garbage had not been emptyed from previous guests. Furniture was so soiled that I would not let my kids sit on it. Took off a cushion and nothing but curmbs and chips. Floor was so spongy I thought I was going to fall thru. Carpet was so dirty my shoes would stick to the floor. Room was nice size and shower worked well. Checked room for bed bugs and found none (surprized me). Place was a loud party on Fri night and though there might be a drive by shooting with the type of guests staying there that night. Pool was ok and breakfast wasn't bad. If you want to enjoy your stay go elsewhere!!!

I am a frequent business traveler. I've stayed in hotels of all "star" designation all over the globe. I must say my August 2010 stay at the Hawthorne by Wyndam was the worst lodging experience ever! I am a new Wyndam member and was not impressed at all with this property! Southfield is quite a suburbian business hub and for out of town travelers this property shocks the conscience and would leave an impression that is less than flattering! It looks nothing like it is portrayed on the website! That is bait and switch and illegal!!! First of all upon arrival the room was dusty. Reeked of fish being fried prior to my arrival. Had to buy incense and air the room out before I could bring my belongings inside! Counters were dirty and had to clean them myself before I could eat on them! Inadequate toilet paper in the bathroom had to go to the front desk to get more after the room had been "cleaned". As for the in room dishes only two of everything...which featured only two drinking glasses,two saucers and salad plates! No silverware at all!!! Light on patio and outside the door didn't work and the cover for the lamp was strewn on the central air register. Garbage and dirty linen/towels etc were outside the door had been there a couple days before I arrived and a couple days into my stay. Floors were dirty. Carpet was dirty and hadn't been shampooed in awhile,my white socks were black after only a short stay in the room. Half the lights in the "suite" had burnt out. The tub had dirty footprints of presumably the guest that had stayed here previous to my arrival. No extra pillows or blanket...the plastic cover for the typical standard extra blanket was in the closet...no blanket to be found! Patio was unkempt dirty and hadn't been swept in sometime, cigarette butts littered the patio. Door to the bathroom was improperly hinged couldn't close the door for privacy. The door to the room wasn't hinged correctly! Housekeeping staff didn't wash the dishes in the sink, clean the counters nor was there any supplies to do it my self! I left the room for the day and came back to a room that had not been cleaned and that's after I had called earlier that morning to request the same! What was more insulting was that someone had been to the room and had placed the "no service" sign on the door! Coffee making machine was broken! Coffee was substandard in comparison to other Hawthornes I had lodged in. Grounds cleaning crew looked as though they were casing the grounds while picking up trash...looking into vehicles not just the "nice" ones but ALL of them. Complimentary hot breakfast was terrible eggs looked gray,sausage under cooked. I had to present a ticket to eat and was admonished not to take my breakfast or anything for that matter back to my room! Half of the features they advertise either don't work or don't exist! The business centre was a laptop computer bolted down to a lectern in the lobby. In order to print a document you have to use the front desk computer and you could only print one page! Should call it the Hawthorne Projects of Southfield!

Owner/Manager has no understanding of customer service doesn't care just wants $$$$$$$. Room was never cleaned and when I called to complain it was like I was a LIAR because the person indicated that they cleaned my room. The supervisor of housekeeping could have cared less. The picture is misleading. Some of the clerks are rude, only had 1 good clerk. Food was always cold and dry. I am a Native of Detroit and would NEVER stay at this place again. Residence Inn or Holiday Inn would out rank this place. Oh MY GOD what a dump

Check in was a mess with people clamoring for different rooms due to isses with their original room assignments. The "three bedroom penthouse suite" turned out be one bedroom, a loft, and a fold out couch in the living room. The couch was soiled and had no linens. The beds were barely made. The room was freezing even though we turned the heat as high as it would go, only to finally realize the loft window was wide open. No tv in the living room. No towels were left in either bath room for the second night. Bedspreads were simply pulled up for the second night. Loud arguments outside the room at 4AM. Someone had gotten sick outside our car in the parking lot during the first night we stayed. Holes in the walls and cracked tiles. How this property ever got a three star rating is a mystery. Barely warrants a one star. Had this room not been prepaid, we never would have stayed there.

The room was clean that is what was good about the stay.The front door was jammed and the central air did not work.When I asked to speak to the Manager I was told on the weekend they did not have a manager on duty.I will never be back.
