Anniversary Surprise was great!
By Lisa, 11/21/08
I took my husband here as a surprise for our anniversary this year. Their main lodge at check in was a beautiful art gallery full of local artists. The restaurant food was mouth watering great. Our room was overlooking a fabulous view of Silver Lake. The evening was brisk yet comfortable and the smells reminded me of my childhood trips to the sierras. I loved the grounds which were clean and for the most part left rustic which nature all around. I will definitely be going visiting Kit Carson Lodge again this next year.

Won't go back
By KathleensA, 08/03/08
This is in a lovely location right on Silver Lake, however this place needs some TLC. The hotel room walls were less than paper thin, which fortunately wasn't a huge issue since we had a considerate neighbor. The cabin we stayed in the next night though was HORRIBLE & desperately in need of repair. Not all windows had screens and the few that did, didn't fit well so bugs and rodents came in. The floor was tilting and had old peeling linoleum that allowed big ants to come in thru the cracks - and in they came in droves even though there was no food out. It got worse when the lights went out so we slept with the lights on & still found these big ants in our bed. Staff didn't seem overly concerned although we did manage to get a refund for our unused nights (you have to prepay and normally it's not refunded if you leave early) after refusing their offer to spray pesticide in our cabin. Their excuse for the poor state of the cabin & the insect & rodent problem is that it is a rustic location, however we've been to many rustic & historical lodges that are in much better shape than this one. So much could be improved upon with just some caulking, screens and attention. It is unfortunate that they don't put more effort into the upkeep of this place because it really is a nice setting. We went 5 miles up the road to Kirkwood and finished our vacation in a rodent-free and insect-free condo and enjoyed the hiking & lakes nearby.

Paradise
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/15/06
Our family has been going to Kit Carson Lodge for over 35 years. When we leave each year we make our reservations for the next year. It has always been Paradise to us because it is quite, no telephone, tv and the families we have met over the years have become friends. Our children are now taking their children to enjoy the lake, day hikes, campfire and slides in the evening was always a big treat. No place like it. We travel over 400+ miles to enjoy Kit Carson Lodge.

A wonderful stay!
By Carl, 09/05/06
We stayed three days in a hotel room, rather than a cabin, and we enjoyed it imensely. The view of the lake at about 7500' elevation was great, and we took two easy hikes. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The food was very good, but expensive, and the service was slow. Next year we are going to spend a week in a cabin, where we can cook our own food. While the rates are a bit expensive, the costs of running a place like this in the Sierras are very high. We recommend it for adults and serious teenagers.

Disappointed Traveler
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/14/06
We stopped at the restaurant for lunch, to find they only had a "fancy" champagne brunch. We were DISAPPOINTED and UNIMPRESSED - who could responsibly enjoy champagne and then get on the mountain road, so we were paying much more than we needed to for a very limited menu. One of us doesn't eat eggs, the crepes were dry, the potatoes have red and green bell peppers which two of us don't like, etc. We asked if we could order one item instead of the expensive brunch, and we were told we could not, so we paid $18.95 plus tip per person for coffee we had to ask to be refilled, fresh fruit, and an egg dish. The fresh-baked muffins were good, but how many of those can you eat? Although the student servers from different countries were delightful to speak to, the service was BAD. One of us ordered the vegetable of the day (which the server had to go and ask what it was because he didn't know); it was 3 slices of baked tomatoes (which were good, but tomatoes are a fruit, not a vegetable) and they brought the potatoes and had to go back to get the 3 slices of tomatoes. Two of the four of us thought their meal (one omelette, one crepe order) was very good. The OJ was either filtered or not fresh since there was NO pulp. We finally concluded we were paying $45 per couple for the magnificient view and would NOT return nor recommend this place to anyone else. Sorry. You need to clean up your act and not charge a fortune for your food.

Love The Location
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/24/05
My husband and I spent our anniversary there last July, then in September we rented a 2 bedroom cabin and took our daughter , her husband, and 9 month old. We enjoyed the lake, the fishing, the trees and the restaurant which is top cabin. Other than the field mice and a bar-b-que that did not work we had a great time. It is a bit expensive and you are somewhat isolated.
