Not so grand
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/24/08
Service was ok to start, but went downhill pretty quickly. Front desk staff were unhelpful, but we didn't relly think there was a problem until we found we couldn't get room service, couldn't get a drink at dinner, couldn't get the rooms tidied: honestly, the list could go on and on. Room was small and, sorry to say, filthy. We had to ask for clean sheets and ended up bribing the staff to bring us some that were stained. When it comes to food, it tasted ok, but my wife got sick from the buffet. We were only booked in for three days. If it had been a week we would have checked out and gone to find somewhere else.

a great first holiday in egypt
By IAN, 3/18/07
we went with some trepidation after hearing unfavourable reviews about the hotel and hearing stories about grasping egyptians continually expecting gratuities. what a surprise was in store for us! the grand hotel and its grounds was superb. the standard in many respects was up to british 5 star in our opinion. everywhere was spotlessly clean. the gardens were beautifully laid out with mature trees and shrubs which included date palms and flowering bougainvillea. the three buffet style restaurants offered a wide variety of dishes with something to suit all tastes. they seemed to call all their beef, 'fillet of steak', which is something to be wary of, because we found that their meat, including veal, was often a bit chewy. we got around this problem by initially taking a little of each type of meat and then going back for more of the type we thought was best. we both suffered from a touch of 'pharoah's revenge', but it didn't spoil our holiday. we had a great time and will almost certainly stay there again. the ratio of staff to guests was very high which meant that we received excellent service. in fact we were pampered. the staff were polite, helpful and very friendly. they like and respect we brits. yes, they do like tips, but they don't press for them and they are content with small amounts. and let's be fair....they work hard for very long hours and for very low pay, so why not help them out a little, after all it is a third world country and if we can afford to holiday there it means we can't be that hard up.

would not go back to this hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/21/06
We travelled to this hotel on 4/8/06 for two weeks. On first impressions the hotel was very nice, the staff were very friendly. It is a very big hotel, but i feel that everything was to suit the Germans,as it was overrun with them, food was terrible, but suited them. I have been on lots of holidays and have met some lovely German people, but i have never met such an arrogant bunch of people in my life before.I travelled with my mother and nephew and found that most of our money went on eating out at either Mcdonalds or the hard rock cafe, because the food was so bad. After speaking to the only other scottish people there, we found out that they had been before and said if we thought the food was bad now it was a hundred times worse last year, they only went back there because they liked the location. We were told before we went that there would be some work being carried out on the roads, when you went outside the hotel it was very dusty and sand everywhere, although to be fair it will be beautiful when finished. Beware the price of soft drinks - 1.20 in hotel 20p in the shops, water 1.20 in hotel and 15p in shops, your bag may be searched when you go in the hotel. Location was good, across from shops and the hard rock cafe and bus/taxi ride to downtown hurghada. Weather fantastic, high 40's, would love to go back to hurghada but not to the grand hotel.

Fantastic time
By Linda S, 7/10/06
Four of us have just returned from Hurghada where we stayed at the Grand Hotel. I was very disappointed with the presentation of the rooms. The beds were made up with rather gray looking sheets and a stained blanket, no top cover. The curtains were held up with only a few hooks. The bathroom was very outdated and the shower tray was disgusting. But..........we weren't there to stay in our room and it was cleaned very day. My sister and her husband were not as lucky with their room as us. First of all the TV wouldn't work. Then the fridge broke, then it was "raining" in their bathroom and lastly, they were invaded by ants. I have to say though that this was all dealt with very quickly. There was a choice of three restuarants all of which served very nice food, the beach was great the water was better and the snorkelling was fantastic. There were two very nice swimming pools which were well looked after. I have heard that the hotel is to be refurbished, so it will be interesting to see the rooms again when they are finished. In all, we had a great holiday and will return.

Never again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/17/06
The toilet cistern was cracked and leaking. The toilet pan was stained. The sink was covered in mildew and had ground in dirt around the taps. The shower base enamel was worn through and also had stains all over it. The drainage hole was rusty and full of hair. The white(?) shower curtain was dirty and discoloured yellow at the base. The shower mixer taps were loose on the wall and had some kind of crack repair substance all over them. The showerhead was rusty and the shower itself gave little more than a dribble of water when at full power. There was no safe in the room and you had to use the rather inconvenient security box service in the main building. This led, in my opinion to the likelihood of people 'risking' leaving valuables in their room. Something we would not have done in this particular room anyway due to the fact that the slatted bathroom window did not close and afforded a gap of more than twelve inches. We paid to upgrade. Unfortunately we did have other problems, which although didn't ruin the holiday added elements of frustration. I waited for 25 minutes on three separate evenings after ordering a beer for the waiter to bring my order. I decided to get my own drinks. I stood at the completely empty bar and asked what kind of brandy they had. It turns out that they don't have a wide range of imported drinks so I was left with the local flavour. I ordered a brandy and coke from one of the four waiters I saw there. I actually stood and watched him walk away into a back room, return with a glass, pour the brandy, talk to his colleague, pour the coke, write out a bill and pass it to the cashier before disappearing into the back room again. The cashier, rung up my purchase wrote something on the bill and passed it back for the now absent waiter. The waiter eventually returned, passed me my drink and asked me to sign the bill. I walked away from the bar a full ten minutes later and I was the only customer. I must say though that when you have the waiters attention they are courteous, polite and often attempt to make you laugh and/or engage in light conversation. We ate at the hotel exclusively where the food from the three hotel restaurants was varied and pleasant although not always hot when it should have been. On day three my wife and I had upset stomachs. I mentioned this to our tour rep and she simply put it down to a change of climate. I reminded her that my wife and I are fortunate enough to travel frequently throughout the year and that this was our third trip to Egypt. We also spend a lot of time in the Caribbean. This was however, our first experience of stomach problems, but thankfully we had brought medication with us.

My thoughts keep wondering back!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/18/06
My nine year old daughter and I was guests at the Grand Hotel for a week in the end of last summer, and we just loved it! We loved the location, the beach, the sea, the pool areas, the many gardens, the restaurants, the service, the activitys and not least the airconditioner!!! We meat a lot of nice peoples from Scandinavia, Italy, Scottland (Tommy I tryed to find you to return your glases before we left and say a propper goodbye) and Germany. We took a daytrip too Lyxor, it was intressting but way too hot! Next time I go there, I'll try to stay at the hotel mostly, there one have all the comforts one need. But we will how ever go on another snorkling trip! It was great and the bote left from the hotel beach. We loved everything exept from John the singer who couledent carry a singel note!

great holiday
By garry, 7/2/05
We had upgraded to a superior room, which I think is advisable. Weather was 1n the 30`s there was plenty going on in and around the hotel if you didnt want to venture far. We went on jeep safari which was bril. also the Luxor trip to valley of the kings, but Luxor was very hot about 45 but I would still recomend. Staff were always ready with a smile and very helpfull. Best resturants in the hotel were the Swan upstairs and also the restuarant on the terrace, also paying an extra couple of pound to eat in the chinese is well worth it. Across the road the Hard Rock cafe is worth a vist. Only drawback is trying to pass the shops, it is worse than the pr in Las Americas Tenneriffe, and there are no prices on anything, it gets a bit frustrating having to barter for everything. I would like to return to the Red Sea. The gardens were very well kept. and there was always staff cleaning
