Lost reservation
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/5/11
On September 30, 2011, I arrived at the Coral Reef Inn with my reservation. The manager stated he had no record of my reservation despite my confirmation number. He was completely unsympathetic and offered no resolution. I called the travel agency who had email conifmation with the hotel of my reservation. They called the manager and he was only able to offer me one night from the original three nights I had booked. After an hour on the phone with the travel agency, they found me another room for the extended weekend at a different hotel and the travel agency paid the difference. Before leaving the Coral Reef Inn, I asked for the manager's name. He wrote it down on paperwork I had in front of me. I then asked for the name of the person or company that owned the hotel. He said the owner's first name, then asked me why I wanted it. I told him that I wanted to speak with the owner about the way I had been treated. Suddenly the manager wanted to be helpful and asked how he could assist. I explained that I had wasted enough of my time and the travel agency had resolved the problem. He then took the paperwork from me and said "you cannot have my name." He scratched his name off my paperwork. The paperwork had a lot of personal information on it, including my name, credit card information, address and new reservation information. I told him twice to give the paperwork back to me and he said no. I reached over the top part of the counter and took my paperwork. He tried to grab it back from my hand. I said he was going to call the police. I informed him I was a police officer and that the only thing close to a crime at this point was him taking my property and refusing to return it. He then said I was "harassing" him. I told him to call the police and that I would wait in the lobby so they receive the full story. He then said he would not call the police and told me to leave. I have never experienced anything like this with the public off duty in my life. Please do not take a chance on your trip to Alemeda by staying at this manager's hotel.

location location location
By JohnD, 8/2/10
I grew up in Alameda so obviously have a soft spot. My wife and I love the Bay Area. Everytime we come we stay half the time in the city and half the time in Alameda. Everytime we both say we should just stay in Alameda. This time we are taking our kids, with four of them can you imagine what we're up against accomodation wise? Well they are making it work in one room without trying to stick it to us to have to rent two.Perfect location to everything, quiet, charming, convenient. If you are expecting a five star resort for what they charge then you are dillusional. It's more like renting an older apartment, but an apartment with the perfect location. It may be old but it is clean and more than suits our needs everytime. Personally when we go to the Bay Area we spend our time taking in all the sights not watching TV in our hotel room. And when we come back the rooms are always plenty comfortable.Grab the bus and bart and I guarantee you'll be in the city faster than you ever could driving there. For the days where we do use a car the hotel has free parking and Alameda is so laid back and centrally located it's easy to go to and from. Try getting that in the city. At the end of your day we take a stroll down the beach and watch a beautiful sunset over the SF skyline. I'd rather have an older but clean apartment feel one block from the beach here than a newer nicer upscale hotel that is right by the airport. And try getting anything upscale in the city - well then you must be loaded.

This Hotel is just right
By Theresa, 9/21/09
I came to town for a 2 day High school 25 year reunion weekend. One of my classmates and I shared a one bedroom suite and the location, atmosphere and amenities were just right. Yes the hotel is an older property but it's kept in good repair, no there are no cooking utensiles in the room;but if you ask the staff will point you to the supply closet and you can take what you need to use for the rest of your stay. The Continental breakfast looked beautiful (didn't eat because we had other breakfast plans) The room was clean, the sheets fresh, the appliances in working order. I was apprehensive staying here because of the reviews on this and other sites. I was pleasently suprised and reminded by my classmate that in gerneral people will complain about a bad experience at the drop of a hat; but since a good experience is expected they won't take the time to give praise. If you are looking for a first class Ritz Carlton experience this is not the hotel for you. If you are looking for a nice experience in an affordable and convient location give the Coral Reef a chance. Thankyou Coral Reef we enjoyed our stay and your location made our reunion trip low stress.

Will never go back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/16/09
Please do not stay at this hotel, the rooms are dirty, nasty,I wanted a room with a kitchen to cook in well guess what they have nothing to cook with. The rooms are not clean and never had a complete set of towels. The chairs were dirty and my clothes showed it.The picture they showed must be from 20 years ago.The staff was of no use,and oh yes they do have a pool ,but can not go in it is gross, and there are always ducks in them. There are other hotels in the area go there and avoid the headaches

Home away from home
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/28/08
We stayed for four days in March 2008. We were able to access public transportation, the beach, restaurants, and stores within walking distance from the motel. We had kitchenettes in our rooms which made the Safeway store down the block very handy, and gave us a feeling of "home away from home" when we could cook up a meal or snack in our room. The personnel at the motel were very kind and helpful. The continental breakfasts served each morning in the sunny lobby were a perfect start to the day. We would definately book again! (the only negative - loose the spots on the carpet!!) KK

Get what you pay for
By Charles B, 2/21/08
The central location is convenient for me as a business traveler between SFO, Walnut Creek and Palo Alto. The McService is everything you'd expect and less. Upon seeing the room number I immediately asked if there was another, before any of the other paperwork was done and the primate he, I mean, desk clerk, barked back "there aren't any more rooms". Another more reasonable guy said, "yes there is" and gave us a better room. About the room itself, they call it an executive suite but there's no other word for it than a one bedroom apartment. It's not bad, in fact it's quite large, but a suite! What do you expect for $100/night? If you get a room in the center, be prepaired to walk the length of a football field just to get to the stairs, then another field to get to your car if you're on the lagoon side, I don't mind but my wife doesn't like walking. Oh, and the highlight is when she asked what there is to do around here, I mean our knowledge of the area is limited to knowing there's a bay within a stone's throw, he said "there's a sushi restaurant across the street". Wish I'd known, woulda brount my harpoon and snorkle gear get me some yellowtail.

disappointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/23/07
I decided on this Inn based on location to Oakland airport, thought I'd give myself a treat with the lagoon suite. I was very disappointed. The "old house" smell was so overpowering, it smelled like granny's old musty house. The silverware was dirty and put back in the cupboard like it was supposed to be clean (and only one setting for a queen unit!). When I unwrapped the glasses, I found waxy substances. At least the sheets were clean although very wrinkled (and yes, I checked for bedbugs, didn't find any) The wireless signal was so poor I couldn't get online - was told I should have called the office and they'd boost the signal, well I'm deaf and don't make too many phone calls. I could go on but let's just say I'll never go back there again.

Terrific choice near Oakland Airport
By AmeliaP, 9/3/07
Nice pool, excellent service, great location. 10 minutes from Oakland Airport, overlooking a lagoon and across the street from the beach. Room was newish and came with kitchenette. The one problem: wi-fi that did not work. A good place for a business traveler on an extended stay, or for families.
