Worse Than Expected (But Great Location)
Where do I begin?
Let's say at check out:
The manager asked me how we (me, my wife, and two girls) liked our stay. Well, I was quite speechless. I really couldn't think of anything positive to say. Finally, I mentioned that the location was great.
The manager was obviously disappointed at my lack of compliments. Perhaps most others offer disingenuous compliments, rather than tell the truth. He then asked if there was anything they could do to make our stay more pleasant. Again... I was speechless.
However, in my mind I was thinking that the best thing they could do would be to sell out to Hilton. Let them demolish the site, and build something more modern. Further, Hilton service is typically superb.
I knew this hotel would likely disappoint our family, when compared to the Hilton Garden Inn in Newport News, VA. But I had no idea exactly how truly lousy the accomodations really were until I checked in.
The hotel is vintage 50s or 60s, and has been remodeled countless times. The building itself seems well designed for hurricanes, which is definitely good, but there's not much more to say about it.
The rooms are modestly furnished at best. The chairs are hard, the carpet in need of replacement, and there's a stale odor in the rooms.
My refrigerator was leaning too, but we were only there for a day, so it didn't really matter all that much to us.
When making reservations online, I had asked for a crib. Upon arrival I inquired about it again and was told it was likely already in the room. But alas... it was not.
I called the office but there was no answer. I then walked to the office and inquired again. I was then taken to a dank storage room and given my choice of two musty, dirty cribs. I chose the least dirty one. (It was in a bag though.) Then I had to carry it to my room and set it up myself! [No service here. You're sort of on your own.]
The tap water had a foul odor and taste. We never did figure out that one.
The ice making machine clearly stated that the ice was for cooler use only. Hmmm? Why not just say "not suitable for drinking"? Perhaps the water used to make the ice also had a foul odor and taste. That would be my guess.
The Belgian waffles were indeed good, but nothing to compare to the "real" breakfast we got every day at the Hilton.
The best thing about the hotel was it's proximity to Hatteras Lighthouse, and the nearby beach. This made our $110 cost for one night almost bearable.
But the absolute best experience was leaving the hotel, knowing we would likely never return.
I'm now thinking about complaining to Choice/Comfort/Clarion about the sub-standard quality of this hotel. It's really a disgrace to the chain's reputation.
I really can't/won't recommend this hotel to anyone (except perhaps for those from third world countries, who won't notice anything out of the ordinary).
Caveat Emptor.
