Great Pool & Beach But Serious Flaws . . .
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/1/11
After doing some extensive research to plan my trip, we decided upon the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach. Our goal was to stay at the nicest hotel possible, ideally on the North Side of the peninsula since the beaches on the north side have the most calm beaches and the most beautiful water.
The Fiesta Americana does have a fantastic beach and pool area. As a matter of fact, of the 7 or 8 hotels I visited while there, it does appear to have the best pool area and beach of any hotel in Cancun. The water is calm, there are four to five pool segments with swim-up bars, and you can rent wave runners on-site. This is the best part of the Fiesta Americana.
Now, for the not-so-great. The hotel is beautiful but rather lifeless. At night, there is nothing going on at this hotel, it is dead. If you want to stay at the hotel during the evening to drink and relax, you will be disappointed. I have been to funerals more lively. Why the outside bars close so early makes no sense at all. There is a three-piece jazz trio that plays at night, however, they must feel lonely because no one is there listening.
Secondly, while the staff is very professional, with their suits and smile-less attitudes, they are more suited to a business-oriented hotel than a resort. Rather cold personnel in-fact.
Thirdly, expect to dole out alot, and I do mean ALOT of money if you plan on eating and drinking here. For a simple breakfast for two expect to spend $50 to $60 USD. I also ate at their small cafe one night since we spent the day out and wanted to just stick around. The food was very marginal, average at best, and we spent $80 dollars for a slice of pizza, sandwich, two beers, glass of wine and dessert. You've got to be kidding! At the swim-up bar I would recommend sticking to beer. The margaritas and daiquiris are so week that after drinking three or four I felt nothing at all! Again, $12 for virgin drinks??
Our room was nice and the view was great. Again, with a big caveat. Our first night we were there we noticed that our sheets were damp. Try sleeping in damp sheets, rather nasty. We dealt with it that night and informed the front desk. Well, apparently that didn't work,. For the next four nights we had to tolerate damp bedding. Here I am at a five-star hotel at have to sleep on a beach towel and cover myself with an extra blanket provided in the closet!
The last warning.... When you arrive they will call you and let you know there is a 'Welcome Package' at the conceirge desk waiting for you. Well, if you want a hard-sell speech on investing in a Time Share pick it up. I would recommend not bothering.
Take my review for what's it's worth. If I had to do it again I would stay at the Ritz Carlton, Le Blanc, Riu, or other hotel where you could actually enjoy some night activities while you're there. This is a vacation after all. The Riu is also on the North Side of the Peninsula so the beach should also be good. My summary, too expensive and uptight for a vacation spot!
