Good food but noisy and over priced
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/30/06
Just finished a three night stay over a summer weekend booked two weeks in advance. Had some major issues and wouldn't recommend it to most people, but it depends upon your expectations.
First, as others have noted, the reception desk personnel were officious. They go through the appropriate motions but there's an unmistakable attitude that stands at odds with feeling welcome.
I felt the strong point was the food at the Del Mar Grille. The ingrediants were fresh and prepared with a deft hand. You can get the same high quality cooking in your room.
Our second floor room had a view (mostly) of a marina. There was, of course, water to be seen but the Shell gasoline logos sort of ruined the ambiance I hoped I was renting for the weekend. There was a tiny balcony and a nonfunctional fridge but they wouldn't even have registered on my personal radar screen were the room not so noisy.
The noise came from the weddings going on below us all weekend. If you enjoy the sort of din that passes for music at these functions, you may not consider this a drawback, but most people will object to an entirely predictable intrusion into their lives...sleeping and waking. The issue is that the reception space is below the inadequately shielded rooms (we had the windows shut tight btw.) It was presumably beyond the hotel's control that drunk and shouting wedding guests returned to our floor at 2AM, but it was the straw that broke the camel's back.
My wife said the quality of her experience at the Spa was adequate if a bit overpriced.
We also brought a small dog. He behaved well towards the hotel and they behaved well towards him...which was a definite plus.
There is an indoor and outdoor pool but they are smallish and get too crowded for swimming laps except for late and early in the day.
In the end we began taking all our meals outside the hotel (which was not our original intention) because, well, we just didn't want to spend any more time there.
