not so great

I had booked a room over the phone with an employee of the Microtel Inn in Rapid City, SD 7 days ahead of our arrival date. I had asked if we could use the room saver coupon for a discounted rate. The employee booked our room gave me our confirmation code and said good bye. On the day of our arrival in Rapid City (an 8-9 hour drive from our home), we discovered upon check-in that they did not have a room for us. Apparently the inital phone conversation to book our room was not entered correctly and the date they had us booked for was the night I called to make the reservation (at 8 pm). The thing that bothered us most was the person we talked to upon arrival did not care that we had confirmation information or that we had driven all day with young children and had no place to stay. Her main concern was that the employee that booked the room did not have authority to give us the room at the room saver coupon rate. She mentioned that several times in the conversation. She also did not apologize for the mistake or offer to try and help us find another hotel (Microtel was apparently full). Luckily we found a place down the street but being summer and tourist season we may not have been so lucky. I thought it was discouraging that the only concern she had was which employee gave us the discount rate and how that he was not "authorized" to do so. We won't attempt to stay with Microtel on any future vacations and won't encourage family or friends to frequent their businesses either.
